Is There a Cure for Alcoholism?

Not unlike other medical conditions, alcoholism can be overcome with prevention, quality alcohol treatment, and relevant scientific examination.

The good news is that if the disease is caught in time, as pernicious as alcoholism is, it can be treated.

Does this mean that there is an alcoholism cure? Regrettably, the medical community has not yet developed a cure for alcoholism.

Stated differently, although an alcoholism cure does not currently exist, many professional alcohol treatment programs exist that can help alcoholics recover from their disease.

The bottom line: an alcoholism cure would be a wonderful medical achievement beyond comprehension.

If people who are dependent on alcohol receive quality alcohol treatment early enough, however, most of them can attain sobriety and start the alcohol recovery process.

What is Alcoholism?

Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependency and alcohol addiction, is a progressive debilitating disease that involves the following four characteristics

• Tolerance: the need to drink increasingly more amounts of alcohol in order to get "high" or to get a "buzz."
• Loss of control: an inability to stop drinking alcoholic beverages after the first drink.
• Physical dependence: going through alcohol withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, "the shakes," anxiety, headaches, and extreme perspiration when the alcoholic suddenly stops drinking.
• A strong desire to drink: having a compelling want or urge to drink.

An Alcoholism Cure: Conclusion

Is There an Alcoholism Cure? So far the medical community has not developed a cure for alcoholism. Let's play devil's advocate for a moment. Let us assume that there is in fact an alcoholism cure. Let us also assume that this cure for alcoholism consists of a vaccine that can be administered as a shot.

What is the likelihood that EVERY alcoholic would take the time and effort to get this vaccine? The point: even if there were an alcoholism cure, there would still be individuals who, for whatever reason, would fail to get the cure.

From a different perspective, if alcoholism is treated early enough in the disease, alcohol recovery is entirely possible. If this is the case, the urgency for an alcoholism cure is somewhat lessened.
