Desperate for a refreshing swim, little ones in tow? Whether they’re just learning the ropes or they’re ready and raring to take your breath away with underwater handstands, there are plenty of child-friendly pools in London ripe for the splashing.

London’s Best Child-Friendly Swimming Pools

London Fields Lido, Hackney

Conclude your dog-filled stroll around London Fields with a dip in the lido, where a sun deck, sunbathing areas and outdoor, heated 50 metre pool awaits. The ‘free swim’ area is perfect for families, and lessons can be booked, too.

How Much? £5.70 for adults, £3.35 for children. Under 3s go free.

Find It: London Fields West Side, London E8 3EU. better.org.uk

Park Road Pool, Crouch End

North Londoners can make the most of Park Road’s 50×23 metre pool – one of London’s largest lidos. If the sun doesn’t shine, never fear: there’s a large indoor pool to enjoy, too. As well as family swimming for fun, parents can take up special toddler swim classes, with autism friendly classes available, too.

How Much? Lido swims are £8 for adults and £4.10 for juniors, while indoor swims are £5.75 for adults and £2.40 for juniors.

Find It: Park Road, London N8 8JN. fusion-lifestyle.com

London Aquatics Centre, Stratford

We know very well that the sun doesn’t shine year-round in London – but that doesn’t stop us swimming. For an indoor, child-friendly pool, head to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, where London Aquatics Centre is ready and waiting with its child-friendly pool. Or take it up a notch by booking one of the Aqua Splash sessions (which run regularly on weekends and during school holidays), where adults and children can tackle an inflatable obstacle course for a day of splashy fun. Originally the home of the London 2012 Olympics swimming events, you can entertain the kids (and yourself) with some sporting trivia while you’re there, and marvel over the fact that, oh yes, the games took place over a decade ago.

How Much? Adults are £7.85 and children are £5.70 for regular swimming (under 3s go free), and adults are £11 and children are £8 for Aqua Splash (suitable for competent swimmers aged 8+).

Find It: Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London E20 2AQ. londonaquaticscentre.org

Hampton Pool, Hampton

Over in south west London’s Bushy Park, this outdoor heated swimming pool is open year round, with changing facilities and a special shallow pool for teaching toddlers and babies. Plus, with a spacious grassy area, relax in the sun with a picnic (or grab some tasty treats at the Sun Deck Café), or have a post-swim kick about. If you live in the area, you can sign your children up for swimming lessons, too. Opening times change weekly, so make sure you check the website before you rock up in your goggles and cozzy.

How Much? £8.75 for adults, £6 for children (aged 3–15 years)

Find It: High Street, Hampton, Middlesex TW12 2ST. hamptonpool.co.uk

Serpentine Lido, Hyde Park

Maybe one for the less fearful kids out there: haul the family to Hyde Park to paddle in Serpentine Lido’s gated family area, where a paddling pool, play area and sun loungers await. Open June to September, brace yourself: the water is very cold (you’ll probably be considerably warmer on those loungers), and you may share the water with the Royal Park’s resident waterfowl.

How Much? Adult tickets from £2 and children from £1.50.

Find It: Hyde Park, London W2 2UH. royalparks.org.uk

Leyton Leisure Centre, Leyton

Another indoor option, Leyton Leisure centre is home to a spacious teaching pool for swimming lessons, perfect for beginners. You can really inject some excitement into your swimming outing, however, by paying a visit to the Leyton Leisure Lagoon where you’ll find a 25 metre pool, a water flume and an aqua play area. Better still, residents of Waltham Forest aged under 18 can swim for free during school holidays with a junior membership.

How Much? Adults from £5.25 and children from £2.85.

Find It: 763 High Road, Leyton, London E10 5AB. better.org.uk

Brockwell Lido, Brixton

Locally known as Brixton’s beach, art deco Brockwell Lido is an Olympic-sized swimming pool in Brockwell Park. A perfect child-friendly pool for summer (note: it is unheated), Brockwell Lido is accompanied by a modern cafe for post-swim snacks – or pre-swim fuel.

How Much? £8.50 for adults, £5 for children.

Find It: Brockwell Park, Dulwich Rd, London SE24 0PA. fusion-lifestyle.com

Parliament Hill Lido, Hampstead

While the iconic Hampstead Ponds are less suitable for little ones, the sprawling Hampstead Heath is also home to Parliament Hill Lido, which welcomes children with open arms with its 60 metre long pool (that’s bigger than Olympic sized) and paddling pool. Though it’s open year-round, save this unheated pool for sunnier days – or kit out the kids with wetsuits.

How Much? Adults from £4.50 and children from £1.40.

Find It: Parliament Hill Fields, Gordon House Road, London NW5 1LT. parliamenthilllido.org

Charlton Lido, Woolwich

Another park-based, child-friendly swimming pool, Charlton Lido is nestled in Hornfair Park, perfect for a post- or pre-swim stroll (or play in the playground, or a splash in the paddling pool in the summer). The outdoor, heated pool is Olympic sized, and is split in half to allow for fitness swimming and leisure splashing.

How Much? £11.60 for adults and £11.50 for children aged 3-16.

Find It: Hornfair Park, Shooters Hill Road, London SE18 4LX. better.org.uk

Bloom at Four Seasons Ten Trinity Square

Bloom by Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square

It doesn’t get much more glamorous than Bloom, the new pop-up roof terrace at Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square. Soak up views of Tower Bridge, The Shard and the River Thames amid the floral space, which has been designed by London florist Wild at Heart – a nod to the ‘bloom’ of a new chapter in our country’s history following the coronation of King Charles. There are also special botanical cocktails, summer picnics and charcuterie boards.

Harvey Nichols summer terrace

Fifth Floor Cafe and Terrace

Harvey Nichols’ roof terrace has had a pretty floral makeover for the season, created in collaboration with American fashion brand Alice + Olivia. Launching just in time for Chelsea Flower Show, the space features horticultural décor alongside flower-infused cocktails by Grey Goose Essences. Guests can also enjoy dishes from the all-day dining menu, including brunch dishes, salads and roasts.

Food and drinks at JOIA Rooftop

JOIA Rooftop

One of the buzziest hotel openings of this year, art’otel London Battersea Power Station has launched a rooftop bar. Found on the 15th floor, the terrace sits above JOIA, the hotel’s Iberian restaurant, offering skyline views, cocktails and small plates. It draws inspiration from Lisbon’s lively rooftop scene, serving seasonal cocktails like the Aventurina, a gin-based tipple with mint, cucumber and lime, and the Pimenta, a mix of tequila, agave and chilli. Pair with sharing-style dishes from JOIA such as octopus salad with red pepper and potato, alongside rooftop signatures including a steak sandwich and a green salad with tomatoes and figs.

Rooftop bar at night with views over London.

Savage Garden

Head to Tower Hill to discover Savage Garden, a rooftop bar boasting 360-degree views of London landmarks like The Shard and The Gherkin. You can enjoy an array of cocktails such as the delectable ‘Devil’s Advocate,’ a tequila-based drink featuring Olmeca Blanco, Merlet crème de cassis, pink grapefruit, fresh sage and lemon. Pair it with nibbles including citrus buttermilk chicken sliders for a night of unbeatable flavours and stunning scenery.

Floor 12, 7 Pepys St, London EC3N 4AF, savagegarden.co.uk

The Conduit Rooftop

Rooftop Terrace at The Conduit

Next time you’re looking for an al fresco drinks spot in Covent Garden, head to the rooftop terrace at eco-minded members’ club The Conduit. Every Saturday, non-members are welcome at the bar, which runs in partnership with Ruinart. The 80-cover terrace echoes the club’s zero-waste policy, with a champagne list on offer alongside bespoke cocktails and a carefully curated cichetti menu. Opens 8 July 2023

6 Langley St, London WC2H 9JA, theconduit.com

Food at Sloane Club Roof Terrace

The Roof Terrace at The Sloane Club

The Roof Terrace at The Sloane Club should be your go-to for rooftop cocktails and bites in Chelsea. Part of private members’ club The Sloane Club, it’s a plant-filled, stylish space complete with both canopies and heaters to ensure maximum comfort whatever the weather. A new menu celebrates British summer flavours – think Thai green papaya salad, English green asparagus ceviche and wild garlic burgers, to be enjoyed alongside a glass of crisp rosé. Head there on a Friday evening to hear live music.

52 Lower Sloane St, London SW1W 8BS, sloaneclub.co.uk

The Culpeper rooftop

The Culpeper

The Culpeper’s rooftop is a botanical oasis, where the venue’s culinary team grow ingredients for the kitchen. It has just reopened for the season, complete with a special regenerative menu designed to showcase the work of farmers and suppliers who put health front and centre. Guests can enjoy dishes including green asparagus with pistachio pesto, whole mackerel with crispy kale, or grilled pork neck with honey and harissa, alongside biodynamic wines and carbon-neutral drinks.

40 Commercial St, London E1 6TB, theculpeper.com

Shima Garden Night Restaurants Bars

8 at The Londoner

One of the capital’s buzziest new hotels is The Londoner: a 16-storeyed venue located right on Leicester Square. Naturally, there’s a rooftop bar: 8 at the Londoner, an izakaya lounge that reimagines the traditional Japanese style of dining and drinking. There’s both an indoor restaurant and a covered garden space, with striking interiors by Yabu Pushelburg set against the London skyline. In the outdoor area, a sculptural rope installation suspended above a contemporary fireplace forms the centrepiece. Here you can enjoy a small dining menu of light bites – think grilled Padron peppers with miso, wagyu gyoza tacos and sea bass carpaccio – alongside a wide selection of champagne, sake, Japanese whisky and cocktails. Expect Japanese twists on classics: the Jasmine & Yuzu Margarita is flavoured with yuzu kosho and timur pepper syrup; while the Sakura Royale is mixed with Roku gin and Sencha green tea cordial.

38 Leicester Square, London WC2H 7DX, 8atthelondoner.co.uk

The Botanist Gin at Sabine

Sabine

A fairly recent addition to the city’s rooftop bar offering is Sabine, perched on the seventh floor of the Leonardo Royal Hotel. Lots of sky-high bars have stellar views – but Sabine’s USP is its proximity to St Paul’s, which feels so close you could almost touch it. The lush, plant-filled terrace is idyllic on a summer’s evening – though if it’s a bit chilly, the inside-outside conservatory makes a good compromise, complete with a retractable roof. Inside is equally pretty too, with tropical greenery and living walls continuing the botanical theme. Cocktails are seasonal, which means the current menu is filled with light summer tipples, like the Sabine Garden: gin mixed with rose liquor, pressed cucumber juice and elderflower cordial. Partial to a Pornstar Martini? The City Tropic is Sabine’s version, made with Eminete Rum and fig liquor. On the food side, the menu offers a mix of small and larger plates, with influence from a range of different cuisines. Think goat’s cheese arancini, miso mushroom skewers, baked focaccia and braised short ribs.

10 Godliman St, London EC4V 5AJ, sabinelondon.co.uk

Trafalgar St James

The Rooftop at The Trafalgar St James

Tucked away beside Trafalgar Square, you can’t beat this rooftop on location. Big Ben, The Shard and The London Eye are all in view from its glamorous sky-high terrace, which sits on the seventh floor of the hotel. From here you can enjoy a European-inspired summer food menu featuring a mix of small plates, sharing platters and mains, from seafood dishes to salads and burgers. Think Korean fried cauliflower, halloumi fries and smoky aubergine with coconut tahini. Naturally, it’s idyllic in the sunshine – but blankets and heaters ensure you stay cosy on cooler days too.

7th Floor, 2 Spring Gardens, St. James’s, London SW1A 2TS, trafalgarstjames.com

14 Hills

14 Hills

Enjoy views of The Shard, Tower Bridge and the River Thames at 14 Hills’ terrace, situated on the 15th floor of 120 Fenchurch St. Open daily from 11am until midnight, it’s set to be the perfect spot for all-day drinking and dining in the city this summer. Enjoy seasonal cocktails and French-inspired dishes like monkfish tail with prosciutto, charcuterie and seafood platters.

14th floor, 120 Fenchurch St, London EC3M 5AL, 14hills.co.uk

The Standard Rooftop

The Standard Rooftop

Pretend you’re in New York at The Standard Rooftop, situated above the hotel’s 10th floor. The rooftop bar has a relaxed festival-style atmosphere, with great city views. Look out for taco truck Decimiño, which serves up Mexican street food and margarita slushies, alongside a line-up of DJs for Sunday sessions.

10 Argyle St, London WC1H 8NP, standardhotels.com

Bussey Rooftop Bar

Bussey Rooftop Bar

With 360 degree views across London, Bussey building’s rooftop bar is rather spectacular come sunset. It’s one of Peckham’s buzziest venues throughout the summer, especially on weekends when the party continues late into the night.

Roof B, Bussey Building, 133 Rye Ln, London SE15 4ST, busseyrooftopbar.com

The Aviary

Aviary

As its name might suggest, Aviary bar is bird-themed, but you won’t need wings to see the London skyline here as iconic buildings such as The Gherkin and The Cheese Grater are within sight from the amazing roof terrace. It was recently redesigned with vibrant new décor and exciting cocktails, such as ‘The Crouching Tiger’, made with Ojo de Tigre mezcal with agave syrup and yuzu. Enjoy alongside oysters and steaks.

Royal London House, 10th Floor Montcalm, 22-25 Finsbury Square, London EC2A 1DX, aviarylondon.com

The Rooftop at One Hundred Shoreditch

One of the few non-member rooftops in the heart of Shoreditch, this new kid on the block promises panoramic East London views accompanied by a fun and glamourous Palm Springs theme. With a Latin music backdrop, expect pink décor, sleek marble and terrazzo, lush succulents and cacti, along with champagne, cocktails, and retro Californian cuisine.

100 Shoreditch High St, London E1 6JQ, onehundredshoreditch.com

Madison

Madison

Enjoy magnificent views of St Paul’s Cathedral at Madison, a glitzy bar and restaurant in the Penthouse spot of One New Change. Drawing inspiration from the sky-high bars of Manhattan, Madison hosts parties all day long at weekends, from brunch to late.

Lost in Brixton

Lost In Brixton

Brixton’s jungle-inspired rooftop hangout brings all the party vibes with Latin American-inspired cocktails and market food. Tucked away behind Brixton Village, Lost In Brixton is the first of its kind to offer food deliveries from the market below, alongside freshly brewed beer from the nearby Brixton Brewery. With traders including Franco Manca, Jalisco and Thunderbird Fried Chicken, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Brixton Village, Coldharbour Ln, London SW9 8PS, lostinbrixton.com

Buck Street Market

Buck Street Market

Buck Street Market was only open for ten days before the pandemic meant it had to close – but it’s back. Boasting the title of Camden’s largest rooftop, the space has reopened with two new rooftop bars, alongside a wide selection of food outlets and retail traders. Think sustainable pallet sofas, living moss walls and a pink terrace – millennial heaven.

192, 198 Camden High St, London NW1 8QP, buckstreet.market

SUSHISAMBA City

SUSHISAMBA City

Like its taller sister Duck & Waffle, the spectacle of the iconic SUSHISAMBA Liverpool Street begins from the panoramic glass lifts, which whisk you up to the 38th and 39th floors of the Heron Tower. It boasts one of the highest outdoor dining terraces in Europe, but during the winter months you can admire the views from indoors thanks to the restaurant’s three glass walls. A glamorous New York City import, the menu fuses together Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisines, and you can guarantee great sushi, cracking cocktails and a buzzing atmosphere.

Heron Tower, Bishopsgate, London EC2N 4AY, sushisamba.com

Skylark Roof Garden

Skylark Roof Garden

A newer addition to London’s rooftop scene is Skylark Roof Garden, perched over Notting Hill with views of the West London skyline. Settle into one of the day beds with a sundowner – their frozen cocktails will go down a treat on hot summer days.

10th Floor, 4 Kingdom St, London W2 6BD, skylarkroofgarden.co.uk

Radio Rooftop

Radio Rooftop

Perched atop ME London on The Strand, Radio Rooftop is one of London’s most glamorous rooftop spots. It’s open year-round: a magical winter terrace in the cooler months, an Ibiza-style hangout in summer. Spectacular views justify the high drinks price.

336-337 Strand, London WC2R 1HA, melondonhotel.com

Market Hall Victoria

Market Hall Victoria

Spicing up London’s rooftop bar scene is Market Hall Victoria, perched at the top of the three-storey food market – formerly the Edwardian arcades of Terminus Place. An ideal central location for meeting friends after work, the sun-trap spot serves up British beers, independent spirits and cocktails – and when you get hungry, just head downstairs for a bite to eat from one of the many food stalls.

191 Victoria St, London SW1E 5NE, markethalls.co.uk

Angler Roof Terrace

Angler

Angler, South Place Hotel’s Michelin-starred seafood restaurant, boasts a lovely roof terrace, open for cocktails and snacks during the evenings.

Sky Garden

Sky Garden

As the highest rooftop gardens in London, Sky Garden is an oasis of green calm with unparalleled views across the capital, and the perfect spot to get away from the heat this summer. Entry to the gardens is free (though you should book well in advance), and while there you can enjoy breakfast, a light snack, an aperitif or one of their fabulous cocktails inside the glass pod or on the outdoor terrace. Spread over the top three floors of the skyscraper there are various dining choices including the Darwin Brasserie and Fenchurch Restaurant, while you should keep an eye out for special activities taking place year-round, from early morning yoga with a view to live music sessions. Top tip: try the delicious freshly-made mixed berries smoothie in the bar.

1, Sky Garden Walk, London EC3M 8AF, skygarden.london

Bokan

Bōkan

In the Canary Wharf area, Bōkan is your best bet for rooftop drinks. It’s spread over three floors with floor-to-ceiling glass to ensure that no matter where you sit, you’ll be able to enjoy the panoramic view of London’s skyline. The 39th floor boasts an all-weather, all-occasion open-air terrace where you can relax with a cocktail, listen to lounge music and kick back on the daybeds. It’s a surprise there aren’t more rooftop hangouts on this side of town, as the vantage point is particularly good.

40 Marsh Wall, London E14 9TP, bokanlondon.co.uk

Skylight

Skylight

If you’re partial to a game or two, head to Skylight in Tobacco Dock, where you can take your pick from croquet, ping pong, shuffleboard and more. Alongside this, enjoy a food menu from Head Chef Karan Ghosh and seasonal cocktails – our pick is the Gin Basil Smash, mixed with gin, apple, cucumber and elderflower.

Tobacco Dock, London E1W 2SF, tobaccodocklondon.com

12th Knot

12th Knot

Formerly Rumpus Room, 12th Knot is the rooftop bar sitting atop chic hotel Sea Containers London. Although the outdoor space is smaller than some of the city’s sky-high terraces, its prime position on the River Thames means iconic views of the city – also visible from the plush indoor seats.

The SS23 Sunglasses Edit

Sunglasses are notoriously tricky to prescribe; a purchase that differs between each and every person depending on face shape, lifestyle and of course, fashion sense. After oversized cat eyes for planned yacht lazing? Or retro rounds for festival lounging? Perhaps it’s classic aviators for sporting pursuits? Or a strategic throwback to oversized shades in order to hide last night’s questionable third round of drinks? Whatever your preference, we’re sure you’ll find the perfect pair with our edit below:

Nikki Beach Mallorca

Nikki Beach

Mallorca

Since it was founded back in 1998 by Jack and Lucia Penrod, the Nikki Beach empire has expanded all over the world, with 11 beach clubs located everywhere from Saint Tropez to Dubai. All offer glamorous spaces to eat, drink, dine and dance, with an eclectic programme of music and live entertainment running throughout the summer season. The Mallorca outpost – which turns 10 this year – is found in the southwestern part of the island on Calvià Beach, the slightly quieter end of Magaluf. Nikki Beach is a place to be seen: it’s all plush white sunbeds, poolside cabanas and bamboo, with a glitzy Asian-inspired menu (sushi, seafood platters and ‘sexy salads’), and a decadent drinks offering (think giant Espresso Martinis and magnums of champagne inside guitar cases). It’s best suited to groups of friends keen for a day party in the sunshine. Notable events this summer include a 10th Anniversary White Party on 30 June, and a Michelin-starred dinner event running in partnership with Taittinger Champagne in July.

Peligoni Club

Zakynthos

Lighting up the quiet north-eastern coast of Zakynthos for more than 30 years, The Peligoni Club is the perfect combination of picture perfect whitewashed clifftop lounging for those without kids, and family-friendly entertainment for those with youngsters in tow. It has the rare capacity to please both equally, offering all-level watersports, multiple lounging areas and options, varied excursions and evening entertainment. You’ll feel at home within hours of your arrival – and, whether you’re visiting for the day for a spa treatment and a cocktail or setting up camp on the white-washed cliff-top decking, few fail to return after the Peligoni beach club experience.

Marbella: Ocean Club

Ocean Club

Marbella

Some beach clubs are great for people watching, others deliver fantastic food; some have a beautiful sea view, others an enormous, salt-water pool for swimming in. Ocean Club, Marbella has all of the above. Open daily from 9am until 11pm April to October with fresh, delicious food in the newly refurbished restaurant and champagne in abundance, it’s the perfect place for a day well spent lounging on one of the enormous day beds. There’s also a menu of bespoke cocktails curated by top mixologists. It’s also well worth checking out the season calendar for party nights and guest DJs – the themed club nights are amongst the most extravagant in Marbella (and usually sell out fast).

Smoked & Uncut

Visit A Food Festival

Sample the best of British cuisine at a food festival this summer. Smoked & Uncut (pictured), the ultimate foodie festival, is held at The Pig Hotel (12 August 2023) and Lime Wood (8 July 2023). Top British chefs rustle up grub that’s a cut above the usual festival fare.

Or party like Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. Every June, foodies flock to the stately home for Feast festival, a celebration of artisan food and drink.

Camp Bestival

Thanks mostly to Snape Maltings, the creative arts campus that is home to the internationally renowned Aldeburgh Music programme and one of the most unique concert halls in the country. Embark On A Beautiful Walk

Wales’ beautiful beaches are a must-visit. Start at the long sandy Rhossili beach in South Wales before heading further around the coast for long beautiful walks in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

In Sutherland, Scotland, a four-mile walk through unruly heather takes you to Sandwood Bay and a mile-long stretch of remote beach. Bring a cricket bat and ball – or your swimsuit if you’re feeling brave.

Sea Pool

Try Cold Water Swimming

Cold water swimming is most tolerable in the summer months, with the beating sun evaporating some of the icy chill. Rising in popularity in recent years, the UK is home to a plethora of pretty outdoor swimming spots to test the waters (with plenty of swimming pool options if you’re seeking a safety net). Venture to the west for tidal sea pools dotted around the coastline, from Bude’s 91m sea pool to the lido-sized rock pool at Treyarnon. Most impressive is Penzance’s restored Art Deco Jubilee pool. Check out our guide to cold water swimming before you head out.

Or Attempt To Paddleboard

If you’re scared of getting so up close and personal with the icy water, try paddleboarding. Check out our handy how-to guide to get started, before venturing to one of London’s best paddleboarding spots, or reading up on how paddleboarding can help alleviate plastic pollution.

Young couple with Ice Creams in the park summer time.

Eat Local Ice Cream

Nothing says summer like an ice-cold scoop of creamy goodness. For the best in the business, shop local: an ice cream from Roskilly’s near Helston is made using Jersey milk from the farm’s 125 cows. They make everything from wild cherry with chocolate flakes to own-made toffee flavours, but the vanilla is still the best.

Bekonscot

Visit Bekonscot Model Village

Tower over Bekonscot in Beaconsfield, the oldest original model village in the world and a riot of colour during the summer.

Stourhead Gardens

Amble Through A Pretty Garden

When Stourhead Garden opened in the 1740s it was regarded as ‘a living work of art’. Amble down paths that lead to classical temples, over a Palladian bridge and around the glorious lake.

Discover more beautiful British gardens here

Staithes

Visit The Coast

Make for Margate and gaze out across the same beach, sea and skies that inspired more than 100 of JMW Turner’s works – admire them in the seafront gallery sharing the painter’s name.

Or grab an ice cream and wander round the harbour and quaint coastal village of Staithes, North Yorkshire, which used to be one of the largest fishing ports in the North East of England.

You can’t beat a soft baguette crammed with crab caught fresh that morning off the very same shore you are eating it from. The Crab Hut at Brancaster Staithe Harbour in Norfolk will certainly satisfy on that front.

The Best Beaches Near London

A close-up view of North Atlantic Puffins in their nesting grounds at Bemtpon Cliffs Nature Reserve in Yorkshire

Try Birdwatching

Inspired by David Attenborough’s Wild Isles? Go birdwatching at Bempton Cliffs while the seabird breeding season is underway. Visit between April and July to spot the famous puffins.

Callanish Stones

See The Callanish Stones

The Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland were placed there in the Neolithic era where it was a site for Bronze Age rituals. In folklore, the stones were petrified giants who resisted converting to Christianity.

Tourists enjoying the sunshine on board the Royal Yacht Britannia

Visit The Queen’s Former Yacht

It’s a year of Royal occasion: admire the Queen’s former yacht, The Royal Yacht Britannia, berthed in Edinburgh. Book in for a private tour to enjoy a glass of champagne on deck and avoid the crowds.

Newstead Abbey

Visit A Historic House

Wax lyrical at Newstead Abbey, Nottinghamshire, the ancestral home of Lord Byron. The grounds of this historic house make for a perfect picnic spot in the summer – just mind the peacocks.

Gliffords Circus

Giffords Circus

Don’t miss one of the Cotswolds’ loveliest attractions, Giffords Circus, a proper, old-fashioned, village green affair that travels from site to site. There’s not a gimmick in sight.

From an environmental standpoint, staying home and never going on holiday again would arguably be the best option for the planet. But when it comes to living sustainably, we must continue to do just that: live. Exploring our planet is one of life’s great pleasures, and while no travel is completely environmentally friendly, we can all plan our trips more conscientiously, and with best sustainable travel and ecotourism practices in mind. Here’s our guide on how to travel more sustainably…

6 Easy Ways To Travel More Sustainably

Choosing Your Destination (& Getting There)

It goes without saying that the closer you stay to home, the better, in terms of lowering the carbon footprint of your journey, and if you can reach your destination without involving an airplane, so much the better. Big cruise ships and enormous beachfront developments are usually best avoided as a whole, and if there’s an option to travel by train, why not make the most of the journey and make it a part of the itinerary?

You should also avoid destinations that are being harmed by the numbers of visitors, such as Venice and Machu Picchu, and check out the green credentials of your chosen location. For example, Barbados recently banned all petrol-based single-use plastic from the island, and Costa Rica is a great example of a country that has made ecotourism a key part of its economy.

Choosing Your Accommodation

Check out the sustainable travel initiatives and ecotourism schemes being practiced by your chosen accommodation. There are thousands of hotels, lodges, private rentals and entire countries working to achieve more environmentally-friendly tourism practices, so wherever you’re hoping to visit, you should be able to find a good option. To get you started, why not check out our guide to eco-travel destinations getting it right?

Calling your hotel in advance and requesting that you not have any single-use plastic items, including bottled water, in your room is a good start, but there are three questions you should ask your hotel before booking, according to Beyond Green founder Costas Christ. In our guide to avoiding greenwashing while travelling he told us to ask: ‘Can you give me an example of how your company, your hotel, your business, is operating in an environmentally friendly way? Can you provide me with an example of how your business or company is embracing cultural diversity and sense of place? And three: how and in what way are you benefiting the local communities and the local people in the place you work?’

Do Your Research

If you want to double-check claims made by hotel groups or tourism companies, there are several resources that provide certification. The Rainforest Alliance is a great source of information, as is Positive Luxury and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. We also have a guide to the sustainable travel badges and certifications to look out for.

Slow Tourism

If you tend to reach your destination country or city and then travel across as much of it as possible within your time-frame, slow down. Stay put and enjoy the community that you’re staying in. Choose places that you can travel around by foot, or at least public transport, to minimise your carbon footprint once you’re there, and to ensure you’re investing back into the community you’re visiting.

While you’re there, find out how the locals live, eat and shop and follow suit. Shopping and eating local produce is the easiest way to support the community you’re visiting. If you’re staying in a hotel, particularly a bigger chain hotel, venture out and find local restaurants to eat at to ensure you’re spreading your spending around and helping local businesses to thrive.

Pack Smart

Always pack a reusable water bottle (almost all airports now have stations to fill your bottle at after you’ve cleared security). And, if you’re traveling somewhere you think it will be tough to avoid bottled water, consider a portable water purifier. You can also request filtered water for your hotel room over bottled water. Pack shopping or tote bags for any purchases or overspill from your luggage, and choose a reef-safe sunscreen if you’re planning on swimming in the sea.

Shop Smart

While you’re away, think carefully about what you’re bringing home with you. If you want to travel more sustainably, don’t buy imported souvenirs – rather, shop for locally-made pieces such as art and ceramics that you will treasure forever. Perishables such as local oils, spices, sweets or olives make infinitely better gifts than something that will end up in landfill in a couple of years.

Craveiral – Alentejo, Portugal

Aerial shot of Craveiral

‘Alentejo will soon be the place to be,’ says Pedro Franca Pinto, the Lisboan lawyer for whom the birth of his two boys 12 years ago prompted a complete change of direction – and the realisation of his childhood dream to become a farmer. He would live according to his values of giving back and leaving things in a better state than he found them. How? By building a regenerative farm that would not only employ locals (as far as possible) and have a positive impact on the land and its people but one that would also offer guests a truly authentic ‘back to nature’ hospitality experience (he’s aware of the buzziness of his words, but in his case he means them). And so, the concept of Craveiral was born.

In 2010, he bought 22 acres of protected land in the Alentejo region, which, because of its relative inaccessibility (in comparison with the over-manicured Algarve and the now extortionately priced Comporta), has remained far more wild and unkempt, with little amounts of dense construction, and – in Pedro’s words – the best coastline in Western Europe. Nine years later he opened to guests, before, you guessed it, our friend Covid showed up. However, thanks to the pandemic, he believes that Craveiral is just the kind of restorative place that people are seeking out.

Deck chairs in the sun

Weekender: What to Do in Lisbon

And it is extraordinarily laidback, with pine trees dotted around the scrubby landscape, a host of animals on site (pigs, goats, sheep, horses and donkeys, plus a friendly beagle called Charlie and lots of cats), vegetable gardens, wooden walkways built above ground so as not to damage the vegetation, along which guests cycle from their white-washed cottages to the central hub for homemade kombucha, excellent local wine, organic artisan pizzas and extraordinary dishes, conceived by acclaimed chef Alexandre Silva, and mostly cooked on an open fire. Pedro is determined that Craveiral walks the walk, not just talks the talk – but he is also mindful that being circular, regenerative and sustainable cannot happen all at once; it has to be step by step, and he knows that he has still much further to go.

For now, all the organic vegetables used in the kitchen are grown on site (apart from the potatoes, onions and carrots); seeds from the cut-up vegetables are then repotted and germinated in the greenhouses before being replanted. The bread is baked in the kitchen; the fish is from the local fish market, brought in by electric vehicle; the meat is from the local butcher. Most of the furniture, equipment and lights in the houses are made in Portugal; a lot of the building is made with local pine; all the water is reused either in the fire system or for irrigation; solar panels provide a lot (though not all) of the power. Later this year, they will be brewing their own beer; opening a new fine dining concept in the greenhouse with an open kitchen; and building an outdoor sauna, the heat from which will be used to smoke Craveiral sausages. Pedro’s determination is that eventually they will become entirely independent from supply chains.

For holidaygoers, there’s plenty to do either on or off site. The beaches (the nearest is 10km away at Zambujeira do Mar) are a big draw (you can use Craveiral’s Jeep to access some of the more remote ones such as Praia dos Machados), as is hiking, riding, surfing, paddleboarding and endless pretty Portuguese villages to discover by car. But you could also happily while away your hours here swimming (indoor or outdoor), having a massage, riding, trying out a beer-brewing workshop, yoga, or just soaking up the sun while your children ramble independently in the safe surroundings. If nature is the new luxury standard, come here where they have it by the bucketload.

Going on holiday this winter? Here are the top winter sun destinations

Great Scotland Yard Hotel – London, UK

The front of the Great Scotland Yard Hotel

For possibly the closest stay to the centre of power in the UK, 10 Downing Street (and the partygate crime scene, no less), you couldn’t wish for a better location than the former HQ of the Metropolitan Police: Scotland Yard. While you won’t find wayward MPs being reprimanded within its walls, the transformation of police station to five-star hotel leaves no doubt as to the history of this 1820s building. Nods to London’s former underbelly abound – original truncheons, handcuffs, barrister’s wigs and stolen swag are all on display, while the contemporary artwork was curated by Koestler Arts from current guests at Her Majesty’s pleasure.

The bustling 40 Elephants Bar offers criminally good cocktails and bar snacks, while at Ekstedt at The Yard you’ll find the best of British ingredients cooked in Scandi style over an open fire. As for what to do? Be a tourist in your own capital city as you tread round the Monopoly board of famous street names on your doorstep. But don’t forget to look up, London’s buildings are photogenically gorgeous above the eyeline.

Villa Katerina – Puglia, Italy

Villa Katerina with pointed roofs

A Brief Guide to Puglia, Italy

When you’re somewhere as stunning as Italy’s Puglia, all you need accommodation-wise is a base from which to launch yourself into the breathtaking architecture, craggy cliffs, secluded coves and (very, very) delectable cuisine of the region. But why not make the base as appealing as its surroundings? Villa Katerina is an impressive conical-roofed four-bedroom, three-bathroom property located 15 minutes from the beautiful Ostuni, aka the ‘Città Bianca’. With beautifully landscaped grounds, this sprawling private home has its own pool, several living areas, an open plan kitchen-diner and plenty of poolside lounging space.

Villa Collective’s on-the-ground manager will answer your WhatsApps about working the oven no matter what time of night, as well as organising more appealing pursuits from coastal horse riding to private chefs who will cook up an Italian feast (and clear up after themselves) while you sample yet another of the region’s rosés on the terrace. They’ll even stock the fridge for your arrival: we’d suggest requesting a strong tipple to recover from the journey, should your sat-nav mislead you through the steep and narrow cobbles of Ostuni (populated with Italy’s infamous drivers). Yes, the base is definitely just as important as the destination – particularly if you’re the designated driver.

View from the entrance, ivy covered buildings; L'Albereta ad Erbusco

Milan’s cognoscenti love L’Albereta. Conveniently situated an hour’s drive from the city in the Franciacorta wine region, at weekends Ferraris and Lamborghinis purr into its car park, unleashing children, dogs and old-school Gucci into the lobby. The Bellavista Tower Room at L’ALBERETA,

The Best Hotels in Italy

Carmen Moretti de Rosa, the driving force behind its inception almost 30 years ago, refers to L’Albereta as her ‘home’. Her two sisters share her passion – Valentina, an architect, reimagined the interiors after fire damage, while Francesca heads up the Bellavista winery, whose vineyards undulate around the estate like a frill on a skirt. Fifty-seven luxuriously appointed bedrooms all feature bucolic views, and there are two pools and a Chenot wellness spa. Maty’s club (named after Carmen’s daughter) welcomes children from three years. A crowd-pleasing pizzeria, La Filiale, tops it off. It’s Italy, after all.
