The Formula 1 championships have been in full swing for a while now, but on Sunday 9 July it finally makes its way back to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix. The lucky few of you who managed to get tickets this year (if you didn’t this time round, don’t worry – we’ve rounded up where to watch the F1 here) might be wondering just what to wear to such an event. While not as formal as Royal Ascot nor as casual as your average football game, F1 events do require some subtle dressing up. Making your way down to Silverstone this weekend, or jetting off further afield for another round in the championship? Here’s what to wear to the F1.

The Country & Town House Responsible Buyers’ Guide

Does Silverstone Have A Dress Code?

While there is no official dress code for Formula 1 events at the Silverstone Circuit, it’s generally encouraged that visitors dress smartly and comfortably for the day. It’s recommended to avoid overly casual or revealing attire, although ultimately the choice of dress is up to you. The only exception may come from hospitality areas, where the dress code tends to be smart casual.

Regardless, the weather can be pretty unpredictable in the UK, so it’s worth double checking the forecast before heading out. If it’s sunny, make sure to pack a hat and sunglasses and pile on the sun cream – but if it’s rainy, whack out an umbrella and pop on a few layers to fight off the chill.

5 Ideas For What To Wear To The F1

1. Team Merchandise

As with any other sporting event, expect a lot of fans at F1 races. Many like to give a nod to their favourite team with their outfit, wearing merch, racing jackets or caps emblazoned with their team’s logo to show their support.

2. Summer Whites

Who says sporting whites are reserved for tennis? A crisp white shirt, dress or linens always passes the ‘smart casual’ test, and looks great whether paired up with heels or flats. This is an ideal route to go down if you’re after an elevated F1 wardrobe.

3. Comfortable Shoes

While not a complete outfit suggestion, it can’t be stressed enough how important comfy shoes are for a day at Silverstone. As the third longest F1 circuit on the current calendar, it’s safe to assume it’s also quite big to navigate as a racegoer – so appropriate footwear, like a smart pair of trainers or flat shoes, is a must.

4. Shirt & Shorts Combo

As we mentioned, the weather is (at best) unpredictable here in the UK, so if you’re making your way to Silverstone it’s probably best to layer up your summery outfit somewhat. We’d suggest teaming up a pair of shorts with a vest top or T-shirt, and then draping a light shirt over the top in case the temperature drops – or fast winds from speeding racers strike up a chill.

5. The Trusty Bum Bag

Another race-day essential you might not have thought of, the iconic bum bag (or fanny pack, for our American friends) is as much of a staple at the F1 as it is at festivals. Fill yours with all the bits and bobs you need for the day – tickets, phone, backup sun cream, hand san – and spend the day blissfully hands-free.

Royal Ascot will be held from Tuesday 20 June to Saturday 24 June 2023. Have you got your outfit sorted? We’ve teamed up with Swiss watchmaker Longines to help point you in the right direction. Here’s what to wear to Royal Ascot 2023…

What To Wear To Royal Ascot 2023

It’s that time of year again. The social season kicks off right about now, and its not-to-be-missed headline event has to be Royal Ascot. While horseracing has taken place at Ascot racecourse since 1711, its summer race meeting officially became a Royal week in 1911 – and since then the event has only grown bigger and better with every year that’s passed.

Today, it’s a glitzy affair, with racegoers digging out their finery for making an entrance at one of the four enclosures. In previous years, the Queen (a great horseracing fan, who often had horses running) attended on the first day, leading the Royal Procession of open carriages down the course to kick off the five-day racing spectacle. It’s expected that King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort, will be making an appearance at this year’s races as the UK’s newly crowned monarchs.

Woman in colourful dress and hart lounging on ornate sofa

What to wear is always of paramount importance when it comes to Royal Ascot. Luckily, every year the organisation behind the race meeting releases a style guide – but this year, the organisers are shaking things up with a new Lookbook for 2023. ‘This year sees an exciting evolution for what has been known as the Royal Ascot Style Guide for more than a decade,’ said Felicity Barnard, Commercial Director of Ascot Racecourse. ‘For 2023 Ascot is proud to unveil the Royal Ascot Lookbook where, for the first time, we look to inspire people through six new fashion edits that draw from current styling trends. Responsible style remains a key part of Royal Ascot as we continue to find ways to dress, whether that is renting occasionwear or investing in forever pieces.’

Speaking on the new Lookbook, stylist Luke Jefferson Day commented: ‘This season I wanted to encourage unexpected freedom under the guidance of the enclosure dress codes and inspire racegoers to be a little more unconventional and inventive in the way they dress up, and how they source their looks. We’ve championed innovative British designers, whilst also showcasing international brands from further afield. I want to excite people to think outside of the box – whether that be shopping resourcefully on the high street or by being more eco-conscious through hiring a look or finding a rare vintage gem.’

While enclosure-specific guides are no longer covered in the Lookbook, the dress codes at the races remain the same. You can see the dress guideline for each enclosure below:

A Guide To The Royal Ascot Dress Code, By Enclosue

Now you have your clothes, it’s time to focus on the next important thing: the accessories. Forget the rings, necklaces and bracelets; this year, it’s all about the watches. We asked luxury watch label Longines to share its pick of the best watches for each enclosure, with ideas for men and women, so you can stand out for all the right reasons at the racecourse.

Explore Longines’s full range of watches at longines.com

Royal Enclosure

Woman and man in formal dress

For Her: This most exclusive of tickets requires its holders to wear ‘formal daywear’, which for women means dresses or skirts of a modest length that falls below the knee or longer; shoulder straps of one inch or wider; and hats with a solid base of four inches or greater. Trouser suits are allowed but must be full length and of matching material and colour. Jumpsuits must fall below the knee. Strapless, off the shoulder, halter neck and spaghetti straps are not permitted. Dresses and tops with sheer straps and sleeves are also not permitted. Midriffs must be covered at all times.

Ladies visiting the Royal Enclosure this season can steal the show with the classic Longines DolceVita on their wrist. Decked out in diamonds, the model features a stainless steel strap, blued hands and elegantly painted Roman numerals on the dial. Longines DolceVita, £3,900, longines.com

Silver watch

Longines DolceVita, £3,900, longines.com

For Him: Men should wear either black, grey or navy morning dress, which must include a waistcoat and tie, a black or grey top hat, and black shoes worn with socks. Cravats or bow ties are not allowed, and neither are novelty waistcoats and ties.

Ideal for the elegant atmosphere of the Royal Enclosure, the Longines Master Collection has all the bells and whistles you could find in a luxury watch: a scratch and water-resistant design featuring a brown alligator leather strap and a silver “barleycorn” dial with a moon phase display and date indicator. The Longines Master Collection, £2,350, longines.com

Queen Anne Enclosure

Men and women sat together in dresses and suits

For Her: Women in this enclosure are required to wear a hat, headpiece or fascinator at all times, and strapless and sheer dresses and tops are not permitted. Midriffs must be covered, and shorts are not allowed. Trouser suits must be full-length and jumpsuits should fall below the knee.

Elegance comes in spades with the (aptly titled) Longines Elegant Collection. Encased in 18k pink gold and set with 68 diamonds, this model is as stylish as it is functional; think a scratch and water-resistant timepiece with a white mother-of-pearl dial and diamond indexes. The Longines Elegant Collection, £6,650, longines.com

Marble watch with black strap

The Longines Elegant Collection, £6,650, longines.com

For Him: Men must wear a full-length, matching suit with a collared shirt and tie. Bow ties and cravats are not permitted, and socks must be worn and should cover the ankle. Jeans, chinos and trainers are not permitted.

Gents can elevate their race day look with this special edition version of the Longines Master Collection, which celebrates the brand’s 190th anniversary. It foregoes the traditional design for a sleek grey alligator leather strap and smooth sandblasted silver dial with 12 engraved Arabic numerals and vintage Longines logo. Village Enclosure

Man and woman in light pink suits in conservatory

For Her: Women must wear a hat or fascinator at all times, while strapless and sheer dresses are not permitted. Midriffs are not allowed, either. Trouser suits must be full-length, jumpsuits should fall below the knee and shorts are banned.

Going for gold this season? You can’t lose with La Grande Classique de Longines, which comes in a luxurious shade of gold and features no less than 12 diamonds (to help you mark the hour) set into the dial. La Grande Classique de Longines, £1,550, longines.com

Gold watch

La Grande Classique de Longines, £1,550, longines.com

For Him: Men must wear full-length trousers and a jacket with a collared shirt and tie, although bow ties or cravats can be worn in the Village Enclosure. Socks must be worn and should cover the ankle, and jeans and trainers are not permitted.

You’ll be the envy of fellow racegoers with the whizzy Longines Spirit Flyback, which combines a classic timepiece with the flyback function when operating the chronograph. A glimpse at the back will reveal a transparent case where you can see inner workings of the watch. Longines Spirit Flyback, £4,200, longines.com

Silver and black watch

Longines Spirit Flyback, £4,200, longines.com

Windsor Enclosure

Men and women sat together in dresses and suits

For Her: There is no official dress code for the Windsor Enclosure, meaning visitors have a little more freedom when it comes to their outfit for the day. It is still encouraged, however, that women attend in smart daywear with a hat or fascinator.

Perfect for those wanting to take a pop of colour with them onto the racecourse, this variation on the Longines DolceVita features a beautiful green alligator leather strap, as well as the design’s classic watch face with a silver “flinque” dial, painted Roman numerals, and blue hands. Longines DolceVita, £1,300, longines.com

Watch with green strap

Longines DolceVita, £1,300, longines.com

For Him: Likewise for men, there is no dress code in the Windsor Enclosure – although it is recommended they wear a jacket, collared shirt and full-length trousers.

Add an air of sophistication to any outfit with the Longines Ultra-Chron, which combines the very best of vintage design and modern technology. An ‘ultra chronometer’ certified by TIMELAB, this timepiece has a sporty design defined by its red, black and silver colour palette. Very fitting for a day at the races. While rather existential, Planet Summer is not all doom and gloom: ‘It centres on the ideas of care, hope and action,’ says Mark Ball, artistic director of the Southbank Centre. ‘How we can build an empathetic relationship with nature that sees us as an intrinsic part of the natural world, and not separate from it; how can that instil hope and a belief that we can all make a difference, that all of our daily actions working together can push us in the right direction, because the world begins to change when individuals decide it can.

‘Our Planet Summer season, which launches ahead of London Climate Action Week, brings together an astonishing range of artists and activists with an invitation for us all to make change together,’ Mark adds. ‘It’s a call to action for the Southbank Centre, too, as we head towards our own net-zero targets, permanently transforming our site and operations and building new relationships with ecologists, activists, artists and communities.’

Since committing to Net Zero by 2035, the Southbank Centre has reduced carbon emissions from its buildings by 42 percent, on track to reach its interim target of a 50 percent reduction by 2025.

Spring has officially sprung in the UK capital, and what better way to prove it than with the return of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show? Over 150,000 people attend the prestigious five-day event each year, eager to see its array of shows, horticultural exhibitions and gardens. If you’ve managed to bag yourself tickets this year, congrats – now all that’s left to do is find something to wear. Here’s what to wear to the Chelsea Flower Show this year.

The Country & Town House Responsible Buyers’ Guide

Is There A Dress Code For The Chelsea Flower Show?

The dress code for the Chelsea Flower Show is smart casual, although event organiser the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) also suggests that visitors usually dress up more on members’ days. The dress code isn’t particularly strict, but this is still a high-profile event where people like to dress up smartly.

Since the show takes place outdoors (and the weather in London is unpredictable at best), it’s also worth layering up and taking something waterproof to keep you dry – see our edits of the best umbrellas and rain-proof jackets for some inspiration. You’ll also likely be doing a lot of walking, so make sure to wear comfy shoes.

You can get into the spirit of the show by dressing up in floral prints and patterns, or by opting for a spring-inspired colour palette of pastels, creams and shades of green.

Big fan of the opera? Then you’ll want to make sure you’ve booked your tickets for Glyndebourne Festival this year (19 May–27 August 2023). Taking place in an old English country house in East Sussex, this annual opera festival is not one to be missed. If you already have your tickets ready to go, then there might be one question left on your lips: what do I wear? Fear not – here we lay out what to wear to Glyndebourne, from dress codes to style inspiration.

The Country & Town House Responsible Buyers’ Guide

Is There A Dress Code For Glyndebourne?

Yes, the dress code while attending evening performances at Glyndebourne is usually formal (the dress code daytime events such as rehearsals, open days and picnics, however, is much more relaxed). In the case of the opera, it’s expected that guests will attend in black tie attire with an emphasis on eveningwear and elegance.

When it comes to women’s dress, Glyndebourne-goers can choose between floor-length evening gowns, cocktail dresses, formal trouser suits and smart separates like a silk blouse and skirt. You can finish off the look with either heels or dress shoes, as well as accessories – think statement jewellery, a clutch, scarf or shawl.

A post shared by Glyndebourne (@glyndebourne)

For menswear, the dress code allows visitors to wear a formal suit and tie or dinner jacket, or a dress shirt and trousers with a sports coat. It’s encouraged that these are worn with dress shoes, like Oxford or loafers, and accessories like pocket squares, cufflinks and tie clips.

Since much of the Glyndebourne opera experience is held outdoors, it’s also worth considering taking a wrap or light jacket to avoid getting too cold on chillier evenings (this is the UK, after all).

How do we adapt and respond to a world that’s increasingly unpredictable? Planted Country is the new festival asking just this question – with a line-up of world experts weighing in to give us the answers.

A Guide To Planted Country

What Is Planted Country?

Planted was founded with the aim of promoting nature-based businesses and organisations through special events, with a mission to reconnect people with nature through great design. Its first event in London attracted over 6,000 eco-conscious punters, and from there the company decided to launch a getaway weekend with a line-up of cutting-edge thought leadership talking about how to design a more sustainable world.

What’s On The Agenda?

A panel talk at Planted

Expect fascinating talks on sustainability

With an increasingly unpredictable climate, Planted Country has coordinated talks which are all about adapting and future-proofing. Think of it as a survival guide for the climate crisis. The talks range from the political (taking action against the water companies that are wrecking our rivers)  to the individual (creating gardens that combat biodiversity decline). There’s also a programme of workshops for yoga, meditation and sound baths, and eco-design exhibitors like Naturalmat, Bramley and Jott Studio.

What Can We Expect From The Festival?

Planted Country brings in voices from the Soil Association, agricultural rockstar Andy Cato, the stewards of our National Trust sites, and much more. Given the nature of the climate crisis, some are bound to feel heavy, but they’re never without hope. You’ll leave knowing you, too, can make a marked difference on climate change. And it promises to be a lovely long weekend. The festival is set to the backdrop of the National Trust’s Stourhead, which you might recognise from Pride & Prejudice. Bask in the weather, explore the festival’s botanical market, and feast on delicious food.
