For all of those heading to Ibiza this summer, the Experimental Group has reopened its storied five-star hotel, Montesol Experimental following an extensive renovation. Frequented by everyone from the boheme to the celebrity set from the 1950’s onwards, it was a hotspot for the likes of Pink Floyd and Orson Welles. And now, thanks to its recent renovation across the 30 bedrooms and three suites, guests can lounge in lounge in luxury taking in the Ibizan sun once again.

A Renovated Hotel Icon: Montesol Experimental Ibiza

As expected, the design takes inspiration from the bohemian spirit of the White Isle and was overseen by the acclaimed group collaborator and designer Dorothee Meilichzon. Inside the Neo-Colonial building, which dates to as 1933, is a palette of cool and tranquil colours that are set against playful patterns and fringing.

Montesol Experimental Ibiza

‘After renovating the restaurant Sabbaba and rooftop in 2021, we have renovated the rooms of this mythical hotel of Ibiza, the first opened on the island. The neo-colonial building from 1933 is made of columns, pediments and arches, painted in pale yellow and white. The colour palette we have developed for the interior design uses the pale yellow of the outside, but according to the Ayurvedic principles, we tried cooling, calming colours inside the hotel to counterbalance heat outside. Solar colours in common areas, lunar colours in rooms, favouring the colours of white, blue, grey, light green and pastel hues,’ says Dorothee Meilichzon

Montesol Experimental Ibiza

There’s a nod to the cosmos too, with moon carvings, brass suns, celestial greys, light greens and pastel hues. These have been studded with design features and further textures, such as masks that have been crafted by Anna Alexandra in Mallorca, oh-so-cool Playdough Stools by Diego Faibre, and shell textures within the walls – carefully made by hand-pressing shells into the lime to shape, one by one, to reflect the hotel’s proximity to the sea.

Montesol Experimental Ibiza

Playful elements continue, cue the bedroom wardrobe, where doors close as if they were jigsaw puzzle pieces, and they’re finished with a high shine lacquer. The bathroom vanities made from Lava in France feature large mirrors in walnut and lacquer above, and these are against the another design highlight in the form of the tiles; using traditional Zelliges to cover the niches of the mini bar in shades of orange, brown and off white for that relaxed sun soaked vibe.

BOOK IT: Room rates start at £245, B&B. montesolexperimental.com

Hotel of the Week: Win A Stay At Artist Residence

Enter our Hotel of the Week competition for your chance to win a one-night stay for two people in one of the Artist Residence suites in Brighton, Oxfordshire, Bristol or Penzance – including welcome drinks & breakfast. Read on to find out about these gorgeous hotels…

Artist Residence Brighton

Bedroom at Artist Residence Brighton

The story of the Artist Residence group began 14 years ago when Justin and Charlotte Salisbury first met as students. Justin’s mum, who’d just bought a Brighton guesthouse in need of renovation, was seriously injured in an accident and 20-year-old Justin stepped in. Having no
idea how to tackle the redecoration, he filled the listed townhouse with artists, asking them to decorate the rooms in return for free board. And so, the first Artist Residence, successful and buzzy, was born in Brighton. It was soon joined by four more. The Brighton original has sea views and retro-style bedrooms ranging from tiny crash pads to a huge suite. The newest editions include three fabulous apartments one sleeping four guests, one with a balcony and all with high ceilings, original features and sea views. Each individually decorated room also features vintage furniture, organic Bramley bath and body products, limited edition art prints and Nespresso coffee machines. There’s also a relaxed neighbourhood hangout serving breakfast and cocktails.

Artist Residence South Leigh, Oxfordshire

Artist Residence Oxford

When it opened in 2017 this was a new departure for the burgeoning Artist Residence group of funky, art-themed hotels that have sprung up courtesy of Justin and Charlotte. The energetic couple, complete with a new baby, headed out of town to leafy Oxfordshire and took on the Mason Arms, a well-loved local inn in South Leigh, stamping it with their inimitable sense of style. There are now five stunning bedrooms upstairs and a further three suites in the stables and outbuildings, plus a cool shepherd’s hut in the garden. Original features have been retained and restored, auction houses and reclamation yards scoured and modern art set against William Morris wallpaper. The restaurant features art by the Connor Brothers, Ben Eine and Lucy Sparrow, while the kitchen produces hearty and rustic British food (think classic fish and chips, and rump steak) in a fun and friendly setting.

Artist Residence Bristol

When Justin and Charlotte were hunting for a site for their latest Artist Residence hotel they settled on an old boot factory in Bristol’s artsy St Paul’s community, a stone’s throw from the city’s buzzing centre. To start with, the building had all of the qualities the pair typically looks for – a nod to the past, original beams and exposed brick walls – to which they added their signature industrial-luxe style, an eclectic mix of vintage and boho furniture and a collection of original, specially-commissioned artworks by local artists. The 23 rooms in the boutique hotel range from the super-cosy Shoe Box, which has arched floor-to-ceiling windows, to the vast Artist Suite – think Georgian cornicing, views over leafy Portland Square and a roll-top tub in the bathroom. The idea was to create a proper, vibrant neighbourhood hang-out so there’s a real emphasis on the social spaces that are open to everyone: a coffee shop, bar, casual all-day restaurant, intimate dining room offering a seasonal menu, garden and event spaces for private hire.

Artist Residence Penzance

Artist Residence Penzance

Artist Residence Penzance brings a slice of eccentric charm to the historic seaside town. With 16 eclectically decorated bedrooms, three luxe suites and a cosy three-bedroom cottage, the revitalized Georgian pile is a unique seaside inn, perfectly situated for daily forays to local beaches, trips to the Isles of Scilly and just a short stroll to the pubs, restaurants and bars of Penzance town centre, the unique art deco lido and a view of the fairytale that is St Michael’s Mount.

With striking organic design and curves in all the right places, Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge is far from your classic tented safari camp. Located in the 5,400 hectare private Sabi Sabi Game Reserve in South Africa – on the border of the famed Kruger National Park – Earth Lodge is the most luxurious of Sabi Sabi’s four camps.

Review: Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge Safari Camp, South Africa

Earth Lodge Water Feature

STAY

Clad in mud repurposed from excavating the lodge’s foundations, Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge’s low-slung suites blend seamlessly into the surrounding bushveld. Each one is tucked beneath a cloak of grass and feels very private, without a neighbour in sight. Once inside, the suites are cavernous. An open-plan lounge and romantic bed laced in mosquito nets take up most of the footprint, while the en-suite bathroom has a full glass front leading out onto the terrace. And the terrace itself is the real deal – there’s a large shaded alfresco lounge equipped with ceiling fans, alongside a pool flanked with sun loungers.

Stone and wood feature heavily in the suites’ décor, with handcrafted headboards and chandeliers adding a good dose of local flair, and a suitably earthy palette of warm greys and beige with some leather accents. Each suite also has an impressively large drinks cabinet.

Earth Lodge Lux Suite Exterior

If you’re all safari-ed out, you could all too easily while away a lazy morning or a late afternoon in your private retreat. There are 13 suites in total, including the recently refurbished two-bedroom Amber Villa, which spans 2,500 square-feet and is perfect for small groups or families seeking a bit more privacy, as it comes with its very own butler and private safari vehicle.

DO

Naturally, the aim of the game at Earth Lodge is the pursuit of exciting wildlife encounters. Game drives are held every morning and afternoon with a maximum of six guests per vehicle. With its privileged location, Sabi Sabi Game Reserve is home to a vast array of wildlife, including 47 large mammal species and more than 500 bird species. It’s a proclaimed hotspot for the Big Five – leopard, lion, rhino, elephant and buffalo – and all this amid a diverse and beautiful undulating landscape pocked with fever trees and umbrella thorns. Aside from regular game drives, there’s the opportunity to partake in night drives to spot nocturnal creatures on the hunt, as well as walking safaris for anyone keen to get up close and personal with some of the smaller animals of the bush.

Amani Spa @ Earth Lodge

While Sabi Sabi’s three other lodges in the area – Bush Lodge, Selati Camp and Little Bush Camp – all offer access to excellent guiding within this private reserve, returning to Earth Lodge at the end of a hot day rattling through the wilderness feels utterly indulgent. The entrance deserves a mention in itself; you wind your way down to the heart of the communal zone, a vast circular space centred around a trickling stream. Artworks by renowned sculptor, Geoffrey Armstrong, made with wood salvaged from trees torn down by elephants, are dotted across the property.

But that’s not all: Earth Lodge is a fully-equipped gym with views over the wilderness, and the Amani spa, where you can treat yourself to a holistic massage.

EAT

Those in the know will be familiar with the fact that, on safari, you’re fed practically all day long – so light and fresh dishes help lighten the load. Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge offers some pleasingly healthy options. Local organic produce is a focus, which pulls through in the flavours of the dishes. Breakfast is served buffet-style, but there’s also the option to order more elaborate dishes from the menu. The lunch menu is lengthy with plenty of salads and wraps alongside more substantial mains. Dinner is typically served a la carte, paired with wines from some of South Africa’s small independent wineries stocked in an underground cellar holding over 6,000 bottles of rare vintages. The open-air restaurant leads out to a landscaped garden overlooking a nearby waterhole, and the lodge also hosts African-themed evenings in the romantic boma for a change of scene, with all sorts of meats grilled on the braai. There’s also a bar for sipping cocktails before and after dinner.

Earth Lodge Boma

Boma

THE FINAL WORD

Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge is undeniably a unique proposition in the bush – from its dramatic construction and eye-catching design details, to an incredible wine cellar. This refreshing take on a traditional safari will sate the appetites of architecture aficionados and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

A Typical Day At Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge

By Sarah Rodrigues

Photo 1 of
Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge

Morning

The days begin early, with a 5.30am wake-up call that gathers guests around a spread of beverages and pastries – fuel for the three-hour-long morning safari. Open vehicles are manned by a field guide and spotter, whose eagle-eyed ability to hone in on far-distant wildlife brings the bushveld to life, even when elephants aren’t casually crossing the road in front of the truck – which they frequently are. Cooperation between guides means that if an exciting spot is made, radio communication ensures that other guests, in other vehicles, are informed – with the resulting dash to the site nicknamed a “Ferrari Safari.” This, in turn, fosters a spirit of camaraderie between guests, and animated conversation characterises the return to the Lodge for a full breakfast.

Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge

Afternoon

The hours until the afternoon safari are one’s own – to relax by one’s pool, work out in the gym, to indulge with a massage or skin treatment at the lodge’s Amani Spa, or to sit over a long lunch, accompanied by snuffling warthogs, sporting tragic mullets and kneeling, oddly prayer like, on bended front knees as they graze. If a creative mood strikes – as well it might, in such surroundings – each room is equipped with artists’ materials – and if inhibition overcomes inspiration, a well-stocked in-room bar should help to unleash the muse.

Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge

Evening

Reconvene in front of a High Tea spread before setting out on the evening safari: the cooler morning and evening hours are when wildlife is most active. At least once during a stay, guests are treated to a walking safari, on which they examine tracks, markings and scat, in order to understand more about the environment they’re temporarily inhabiting – and about the creatures who inhabit it full-time. Expect a stop for a sundowner, during which the front of the vehicle folds out to become a bar, and guests can watch evening staining the sky from pink and orange, to red and purple, with a long, cold (the staff even have ice cubes) spirit in hand.

In the darkness on the way back to Earth Lodge, the spotter’s torch beam swings in wide arcs, picking out the gleam of a nocturnal eye, or the savage curl of a snake in a tree. Returning to the Lodge, guests can choose to head straight to the bar (where gin and tonic is served, very literally, from a tap) or return to the room to freshen up in the vast shower or tub, before dining under the stars at the outdoor boma (South African barbecue area) or in the atmospheric wine cellar, in which a collection of over 6,000 bottles of wine is held.

BOOK IT

Rates from £1,245 per person per night. This includes open vehicle safaris by day and at night, environmental awareness walking safaris, breakfast, lunch, ‘boma’ dinner, all drinks excluding French Champagne and Private Collection Wines, WiFi and limited laundry service. sabisabi.com

And it has all the good things going on: there’s a sustainable agriturismo, creative retreats, gastronomic experiences including truffle hunting (from 1 October), and a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the arts, all rolled into a magical stay.

A Creative Hotspot in Tuscany: Villa Lena

Exterior of Villa Lena

STAY

An agriturismo hotel-meets-retreat-meets-artists residency, at the heart of Villa Lena is creativity in all forms: architecture, design, artwork, food, and ethos. After all, the property is brought to you by contemporary art collector and a former curator, Lena Evstafieva, her husband, musician and producer Jérôme Hadey, and Parisian restaurateur and nightclub owner Lionel Bensemoun. Having seen an opportunity to bring together their experiences in the worlds of music, art, entertainment, film, fashion in once, unique place nine years ago, the result was Villa Lena.

Situated within the province of Pisa, and set in 500 hectares of woodland, olive groves, and vineyards, there are 74 rooms and villas at Villa Lena, so guests can really tailor their stay, from boutique hotel rooms to private villas.

The accommodation features the recently renovated Fattoria, which dons superior rooms in ancient stables with vaulted ceilings, marble bathrooms and wooden floors, a short stroll from the restaurant and main pool. There’s also San Michele for those who want to be in the hub of the hotel – it’s in the same building as the namesake restaurant and bar, with six luxurious bedrooms, complete with en-suite bathrooms with bathtubs and French door-windows looking over the hills or to the 19th-century Villa – and they’re a stone’s throw away from the pool. The private villa, Casetta Bella, consists of three bedrooms, a self-contained kitchen, a large bathroom and its own outdoor patio area, as well as access to a private swimming pool, and it’s a 20-minute walk from San Michele. And lastly, there’s the choice to go big with the Maison Stento private villa, with its private pool, four en-suite double bedrooms, open-plan living space, outdoor terrace and kitchen – it’s an ideal choice for larger parties or families and a 20-minute walk from the hotel’s reception.

Villa Lena

DO

There’s a whole host of things to see, do, experience and explore at Villa Lena, and for 2023, it has introduced new offerings in the form of fun and enlightening retreats that encourage creativity, collaboration, and connections amongst the curious, environmentally minded and adventurous travellers. As such, there’s Creative Retreats with Ana Kerin of Kana London, natural perfumery making, a summer solace break, and upcoming sees the October Harvest Festival Retreat, hosted by Marsano Team and Annett Kuhlman (11-16 October), the Autumn Yoga Retreat by Nina Butler (6-11 October), the 7-Day Yoga and the Cuisine & Dolce Far Niente Summer Retreat hosted by Robert Sidoti with Top Yoga Retreats (17-23 August).

These retreats sit alongside an array of related events and workshops such as morning yoga, flower arranging, cocktail making, poolside DJ sets, water colour painting with Principal Instructor at The Florence Academy of Art Tanvi Pathare, and farm-to-table experiences that includes picking vegetables from their orto with the chef. There’s kid’s workshops and events throughout the year too, led by artists-in-residence, collaborators, and partners with foraging, collage, and culinary workshops.

Yoga at Villa Lena

To note, Villa Lena also produces its own wine on site, which provides an excellent excuse to tour their vineyard, and sample their vino, plus others from the local region – learning all about organic, biodynamic and natural wines along the way. In true Italian style, this is served with fresh focaccia and local cold cuts, how it should be.

Olive oil is also produced on the grounds, so there’s pasta making and olive oil tasting, with a chance to learn about the traditional and organic techniques used to harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the 2,000 olive trees on the estate.

For all those foodies out there, the pezzo forte must be the truffle hunt, pasta workshop and lunch, that starts from early October – mark it in your diary. The most anticipated autumn activity in Tuscany, amongst the estate’s 500 hectares is ancient woodland and wildlife including wild boars and tartufi bianchi. Join the ‘silent hunt’, which means visitors can search for some of the best white truffles in Tuscany but doing so with a respect for nature.

As well as this, The Villa Lena Foundation, the art foundation that runs alongside the agriturismo hotel, has introduced Open Days for the 2023 season whereby it opens its doors to national and international curators, collectors, arts professionals and guests of the hotel to visit the studios, share a meal, listen to talks, and learn more about the ethos and work of the foundation; offering a chance for multidisciplinary artists to grow their network.

With the rotation of artists comes new artwork of varying mediums on show, displayed in the public spaces of the hotel, left by the alumni for guests to admire (and purchase), such as a new digital photograph created by Stephanie Roland titled ‘The Explorer’ in Villa Lena’s Fattoria building.

Take a stroll about the estate and visit the medieval park, Toiano Vecchio, which was once the site of a medieval castle. Centred around a hill, at one of the highest points in the region, the site features an ancient fountain, a shell-clad grotto, and Villa Lena’s largest organic vegetable garden. Former artists-in-residence and landscape designers Jocelyn Oppenheim and Kate Smaby oversaw improvements including the Sunrise and Sunset terraces that allow guests to take in the scenery. The park is open to the public on Sundays during designated hours, and open to the hotel guests throughout the season.

For those who want to go further afield, explore the towns and cities such as the small walled 13th century, medieval hill town of San Gimignano (30km), Lucca (60km), Siena (75km), or Florence (80km).

Crafts at Villa Lena

EAT

It goes without saying, food is central to Villa Lena, and along with the culinary workshops, every day is an experience and a complete foodie’s delight. Being home to the destination farm-to-table restaurant, Osteria San Michele, it serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner in a casual, considered setting, along with bar – just pull up a stool and try one of their cocktails (the VL Spritz) or one of their wines.

Here, expect the very best of authentic Italian cuisine that uses Villa Lena’s natural larder and orto – simple, organic ingredients such as homemade pasta, freshly made cheeses, and locally sourced meats are made into spectator dishes. All washed down with organic wines (and for those who want a taste of Tuscany at home their wines and olive oil are available to buy via their e-commerce site, Cabinet of Curiosities).

What’s more, flowers are picked from their sustainably grown flower garden, and these blooms adorn the tables of the restaurant, and throughout the property.

Villa Lena

Annabel Sougne

FINAL WORD

A very special agriturismo hotel located in the heart of rural Tuscany, Villa Lena makes for the perfect break, offering a chance to be fully immersed in creativity, wildlife, and deliciousness. Just soak up the 19th century Italian aristocratic vibes (the villa was once owned by the Augusto and Tereza Del Frate – and it was a party spot even back then). So, whether you’re wanting a family getaway, a solo trip, to kick back with your other half whilst taking in the picture-perfect Tuscan landscape by the pool (complete with a glass of the Villa Lena’s own sparkling rosé, of course), or get stuck into a creative retreat to awaken the senses, this place will be your happy place.

Occupying a 17th-century building once home to Sir James Dick, Provost of Edinburgh, Prestonfield House plays double duty as both a lavish countryside retreat and a city escape. Located just 10 minutes from Edinburgh’s Old Town, the hotel is set amid 20 acres of immaculate private parkland and, contrary to its unfussy white exterior, Prestonfield House’s interiors are a riot of ornamental rococo opulence fit for royalty.

Hotel Review: Prestonfield House, Edinburgh

STAY

There’s nothing left unadorned at Prestonfield House. Deep rouges and resplendent golds are revealed through rich tapestries, lavish textiles, embellished wallpaper and ornate antiques in the salons and public spaces. This continues through to the 18 exquisitely adorned guestrooms where sumptuous velvets abound, with regal statement beds overlooking the manicured greenery outside, while bathrooms, lined in Venetian glass, have Penhaligon’s toiletries.

the owner's suite

There’s the Owner’s Suite – discreetly accessed by a private turret staircase and hallway – and five romantic suites named after historical figures; the Winston Churchill suite showcases military memorabilia, while the moodier Benjamin Franklin suite is decked in walls of trompe-l’oeil drapery. Four-legged friends are also welcome, with comfy beds and dog bowls provided, alongside the sweep of land to bound around outside.

DO

Adjacent to Royal Holyrood Park, at the foot of Arthur’s Seat, Prestonfield House is in a prime location to explore Scotland’s beautiful landscape. Golfers can play a round on the 18-hole course next door and work up an appetite for afternoon tea in the rose garden. And, during the gloomy winter months, the Baroque-inspired Tapestry Room is a cosy spot to enjoy finger sandwiches and board games besides roaring log fires.

Further afield, Prestonfield House is just a 10 minute drive from Edinburgh’s Old Town, where you’ll also find its sister property, Witchery by The Castle, a sumptuous and eclectically indulgent hotel with a restaurant.

Prestonfield House's Tea House

EAT

With on-site beehives and a kitchen garden filled with all sorts – from courgette flowers to peas and mint – Prestonfield House is all about the farm-to-fork experience. It is also documented as the first estate to grow rhubarb in the 18th-century, which has inspired the name of the hotel’s restaurant. Here, the fine dining menu offers dishes from land, sea and air (including a separate vegan menu), with a focus on seasonal Scottish produce from artisan suppliers. Expect dishes like Glenkinchie whisky-cured sea trout mousse with ajo blanco, radishes and foraged herbs, followed by a deliciously tender loin of Scottish Borders lamb served with crushed peas, curds and whey.

THE FINAL WORD

This sumptuous bolthole offers a peaceful and relaxing getaway while still providing easy access to the beating heart of Edinburgh. With splendid gardens, lavish antique-filled interiors and an excellent restaurant – alongside top service and a never-to-forget team that will look after you during your entire stay – Prestonfield House certainly hits the mark for the best of both worlds.

BOOK IT

Room rates for Prestonfield House start from £375 per room per night, including breakfast. prestonfieldhouse.com

Headed to Ibiza before the season ends? Whether you’re looking to join the party pilgrims at the best clubs in Ibiza, or you want to unwind amidst the beauty of the White Isle, read our guide to where to go and what to do this season..

STAY

The Standard, Ibiza

Bathroom with a view

A firm favourite since its opening last year, The Standard’s Ibiza branch fronts the island’s main plaza, Vara de Rey, and is described as a ‘year-round adult playground’. With a design conceived by Lázaro Rosa-Violán and interiors by Oskar Kohnen, the hotel boasts a distinct 60’s vibe that is both fun and classy. There are 67 rooms and suites to explore, as well as a restaurant (which transforms after hours into an intimate nightlife experience) and a rooftop bar with panoramic views of the island. Formentera is also just a short, 20-minute ferry trip away. standardhotels.com

Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay

Positioned as one of the White Isle’s leading five-star destination, from the owners of Marbella Club and Puente Romano, the hotel offers 152 leading designer rooms and suites, a spa by Six Senses, four restaurants and bars, and an incredibly skilful curation of indulgence and serenity in one of Ibiza’s chicest bays.

Nobu Ibiza Bay Hotel

Designed to be the ultimate playground for grownups, every element has been carefully considered to provide guests with the finest, authentic island experience. The resort itself is a masterclass in understated luxury  – natural materials like marble, stone and rope are used against a cool palette of whites, golds and Ibizan blues and the entrance is a light-filled atrium that leads your gaze directly through to the ocean beyond. Read Sophie Ball’s full review of Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, here

Destino Ibiza

Destino Ibiza

Part of the Pacha group, Destino is the perfect choice if you want to experience the laid-back luxury on offer on the White Isle, while dipping your toe into the pool-party. Enjoying a glorious position on the secluded cliff top of Cap Martinet in Talamanca Bay, Destino overlooks Ibiza old town, it’s worth pre-booking one of the sun beds positioned along the cliff wall for the best lounging views (and making the most of the excellent pool-side service for bar snacks including fish tacos and guacamole, which must be accompanied by a lychee vodka fizz). Things are tranquil in the day with open-air yoga and outstanding treatments to choose from in the wellness centre, but there’s the chance to turn your day bed into a rave-zone on certain afternoons as Destino hosts Rumors every Sunday night from 5pm-12am, as well as other one-off special events throughout the season. destinopacha.com

OD TalamancaA relatively new 5 star boutique hotel, low-key sophistication is the name of the OD game. Located a block back from the iconic Talamanca beach, and just a 15-minute drive from Ibiza Airport, make use of their valet service for guests, if you arrive by hire car. Although, with a stylish sundeck featuring three pools, and a DJ playing from lunchtime ‘till dusk, there’s little need to move far during the day. Not to mention the local beaches, and Ibiza’s legendary Fish Shack, being just a short walk away.

OD Talamanca, Ibiza

OD Talamanca

Architecturally designed interiors feature narrow tongue and groove sustainable wood panelling, creating a Scandinavian look and feel of organic warmth. Iconic mid century pieces include Eames Bucket Chairs in the dining area. Where we took full advantage of the breakfast buffet – with everything from protein pancakes to eggs benedict on the extensive menu. All served ‘till noon, for those sleeping off a night on the party Isle. Rooms are mostly open plan, with well considered enclosed bathroom areas, allowing for a little…ahem, privacy.  Our balcony overlooked those lounging poolside, with stunning vistas of the island’s most exclusive marina and Ibiza town twinking further afield. While another worthy mention goes to the complimentary soft drinks in the mini-bar. A rarity in Ibiza, where a bottle of water in hotels and clubs often costs 15 euros. Book your stay at od-hotels.com.

SHOP

Boutiques on the island are springing up faster than you can say ‘boho chic’. There are two sartorial vibes, so you need to choose your fashion tribe. Those from the Roberto Cavalli school of dressing – and, indeed, he has just opened his latest Cavalli Club near the marina – will be flaunting tight-fitting everything, sky-scraping shoes and excessively glam accessories, all packed and brought with you in your Louis Vuitton luggage.

For the more laidback look, you can stockpile broderie anglaise, scarves, shawls and yoga gear at La Galeria Elefante. Oh, and check out ex-Elle journalist Grace Saunders’ gorgeous jewellery label Circa Ibiza, which reworks vintage charms and lockets, turning them into modern collectibles. LC

Sunset- from Benirraas beach

Sunset from Benirras beach

PARTY

You can of course come to Ibiza and not party. The northern part of the island is far quieter (this is where Jade Jagger and Charlotte Tilbury prefer to be; read Jade’s guide to Ibiza, here) – and you can do some beautiful walks and enjoy gentle evenings at places like Paloma, which serves up terrific homemade grub in the middle of the island.

But really – at least once – you need to shake your bootie on the podium at Pacha or Amnesia to strike it off your bucket list. Lots of restaurants, like the Cavalli Club mentioned, have dance floors that you can hit after supper if you want to avoid the megaclubs. For celeb spotting and day-to-night partying, we love Blue Marlin, Nikki Beach and Cipriani, the very place where the Justin Bieber/Orlando Bloom face-off went down in 2014. LC

For something entirely different, check out Lio Ibiza. Pairing world-class cabaret with Ibiza’s best DJs and seriously good cuisine, Lio offers one of the wildest nights on the island. Kick off your night with an immersive three(ish)-course meal of some of the island’s best food, while watching an incredibly talented cast perform a set of titillating dance, musical and burlesque numbers, before the venue is transformed into a club to dance the night away to some of the most talented DJs on the circuit (this season saw a residency from Idris Elba). The cabaret club is opening its doors in London next year for a six-week pop-up, and you can read all about it in our Lio London guide here. RC

The C&TH Guide to the Maldives

EAT

Aiyanna Ibiza

From the team behind the widely renowned Amante Ibiza, comes sister restaurant Aiyanna. Located in Cala Nova Bay on the north side of the island, Aiyanna offers a modern take on Western Mediterranean food with meze sharing plates, free-range fish, organic meat and an array of vegetarian options. Continuing the tradition of the perennially popular Ibizan boho vibe, Aiyanna also offers 60 beach beds and a daily wellness programme with morning yoga sessions.

Known as one of the best sunset spots on the island, Hostal La Torre is a must-visit for tasty tapas, speedy service and sundowners, weather permitting. Tapas of crisp fried anchovies, moist tortilla and creamy burrata with sticky figs arrived promptly before delectable monkfish stew with clams and plenty of garlic. A crumbly and tangy berry cheesecake (two spoons), rounds things off nicely. If you pick a clear evening, you’ll find the place buzzing – DJ playing ambient house, not a single free spot out front on the bleached decking. A hotspot indeed, with booking essential – when in season. LC

Atzaró Beach Club

Atzaró Beach Club

Aubergine by Atzaró & Atzaró Beach

Atzaro Beach club and restaurant can be found on the North-East side of Ibiza on the beautiful beach of Cala Nova Reminiscent of traditional 70s Balearic style, the Atzaro Design team has created a super relaxed, chic environment with a combination of natural woods and rattan, terracotta pots alongside beautiful local plants cacti and palms.  The soft neutral colour palette accompanied by the sound of the crystal clear waves gently breaking over the beach creates a tranquil environment in which to while away the lazy summer hours. Its relaxed seating areas, day beds and soft cushions create a casual relaxed lounge feel by day or a more vibrate energetic vibe by night. Try wholesome delicious dishes, with lots of seafood and vegetable-rich choices to accompany a cocktail or three. Alternatively, check out the farm-to-table offering at Aubergine by Atzaró, where you’ll find salads such as the Roasted Aubergine Carpaccio, featuring cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, pomegranate seeds, dates, pistachios and rocket pesto, served with naan bread, tahini sauce and chilli oil, and the Turkish aubergine stuffed with beef and lamb meat, honey, chili, spices, with creamy yogurt and tahini sauce. There’s also a full barbeque menu, served from an open BBQ kitchen. aubergineibiza.com atzarobeach.com

House of WOW Ibiza

(c) mariasantosphotography, House of WOW

House of WOW

New for summer 2023, if you want to swerve minimum spends and the hipster crowd, House of WOW is worth checking out. Located just outside Santa Gertrudis in the middle of the island, the kitchen is headed up by Ibizencan chef Cristina Gledson and it’s open seven days a week from 7pm until 3am, making it the perfect spot for pre-dinner cocktails or late night drinks as well as an indulgent meal. wow-ibiza.com

VISIT

Don’t miss a trip to the famous Hippy Market where over 500 craftspeople tout their wares (it runs every Wednesday). There’s also excellent food and music to keep you happily occupied for a few hours. For something off-the-beaten track, try the Sunday market at San Juan (again, in the quieter north of the island), which sells everything from natural soaps, herbs and spices and leather goods to freshly baked bread, fresh olive oil and cheese.

WHATEVER YOU DO…

So many of the beaches (we recommend Benirrás beach or Cala Salada) have the most amazing beach cafes, which offer the perfect antidote to the big clubs. Pre-trip, buy Hjordis Fogelberg Jensen’s book My Ibiza, which includes things to do and places to see that even the locals don’t know about.

Ibiza Old Town

Ibiza Old Town

LIVE LIKE A LOCAL…

Avoid visiting in high summer. The island’s character changes completely in the quieter months and you can even find a fair amount of sunshine in January and February – perfect for a yoga or detox retreat. Ibiza Town is a UNESCO world heritage site and well worth a proper visit.

Whether you’d like to lounge around a chic hotel, immerse yourself in the Dorset countryside, or you’d prefer a hotel base from which to explore Dorset’s many delights – Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, and the endless sandy beaches to name a few – here are the best hotels in Dorset, C&TH approved.

Exterior of The Seaside Boarding House, a white-panelled hotel on the Jurassic Coast.

The Seaside Boarding House – Burton Bradstock

You’ll find this magnificent hotel on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site overlooking Lyme Bay. The décor is inspired both by classic Edwardian style and Edward Hopper’s famous Cape Cod paintings – making for delightfully unique spaces that feel at once refreshing and comfortingly familiar.

The dining opportunities at The Seaside Boarding House are not to be missed: tuck into fresh oysters and crab sandwiches at the bar, or head to the incredible restaurant, where you can enjoy unparalleled views of the Lyme Bay seascape.

After a day at the beach, sink into a Naturlmat organic mattress – handmade in Devon – and fall asleep to the sound of the sea. It’s a coastal dream.

A bedroom at The Nici, a hotel in Dorset

The Nici – Bournemouth

Boy, this new sassy hotel overlooking West Cliff beach in Bournemouth is a boon for locals and tourists alike – not forgetting those who like ‘gram-friendly photos. Move on tired seaside accommodation with 70s-style menus (not in a good way) and pokey rooms, and usher in the Nici, a bright, airy, fabulously retro (in a good way) hotel with more than a taste of Miami’s South Beach via Cuba sprinkled throughout – plus exceptionally friendly staff.

From the flamingos (on the walls, by the pool) to the pineapples (on your in-room cocktail shaker and glasses), from the colourful artworks to the music, this place screams fun: sunbathing by the stunningly long pool with its white loungers and cabanas; indulgent Oskia treatments in the grown up spa; homemade pizzas and margaritas at Coco Nuts, the pool-side cocktail bar.

Come cocktail hour, the bar fills with locals out for a spoiling evening; groups of friends splashing out for a birthday treat; hotel guests (from families to couples) enjoying the partyish atmosphere before settling down for prawns, burgers, steaks and the like (there’s plenty of veggie options too).

Rooms are bright and white in homage to the salty seaside breeze; large beds are accented with green velvet throws for a dash of colour. Brassware runs throughout. Bag a sea-facing room – and even better one with a balcony; lower ground floor rooms have their own Jacuzzis and private patios.

The broad, golden beaches of Bournemouth are a short walk down the cliff – to the right is its famous pier (towards the town centre). Lucky Bournemouth: surely this is the start of this seaside stalwart’s renaissance?

The Eastbury Hotel

The Eastbury – Sherborne

Originally a gentleman’s residence in the charming historic town of Sherborne, The Eastbury is a Grade II listed Georgian building, and now a multi award-winning five-star hotel. Guests keep returning for its understated charm, friendly staff, comfortable rooms, stand-out restaurant and great location as a base to explore the glorious Dorset countryside. The 26 bedrooms are split between traditional luxury and contemporary chic, full of colour and abstract paintings. Five Victorian Garden Potting Shed Suites are discreetly located within the lovely garden, as is its boutique luxury spa, which has a wild meadow roof and inviting circular wooden door. Expect local, seasonal dishes on the à la carte menu at Season’s (tuck in on the delightful, leafy terrace), and an impressive wine list curated from the de Savary’s private collection.

With its wacky profusion of turrets, gargoyles, stone casements and overlapping tiles on steep roofs, this enchanting 18th-century house will bring an instant smile to your face and memories of tales of Hansel and Gretel. As for the views? You’ll be entranced, especially looking across the sheep-flecked fields and the sea to Old Harry Rocks. Built as a grand summer house, this Studland Bay delight is a much-loved seaside sibling in the drove of Pig hotels, and it positively brims with charm. In addition to the usual conservatory restaurant (with signature 25-mile menu) and walled kitchen garden, there are quirkily different bedrooms, including a charming shepherd’s hut with log fire and separate bathroom. There’s a buzzy outdoor bar with a wood-fired oven for sourdough pizzas, a private dining room in a dreamy thatched hut (complete with its own ice cream cart), and essential beach bags, mats, buckets and spades in every room. A thrilling, wildly popular hotel. For fun in the sun, and smiles on faces, you need look no further.

The Most Beautiful Beaches in the World

Moonfleet Manor

Moonfleet Manor – Weymouth

Is there a more idyllic setting for a family break than the intriguingly named Moonfleet Manor? If it sounds like something out of an adventure novel, that’s because it is: steeped in smuggling history, the house formed the backdrop for John Meade Falkner’s swashbuckling novel of the same name. Built for Maximilian Mohune and overlooking Fleet Lagoon on the Jurassic Coast, the big, friendly Georgian house has a spectacular location. Its elegant and welcoming interiors provide the perfect contrast to the spine-tingling landscape of Chesil Beach, an 18 mile-long stretch of pebbles (about 180 billion, they reckon) and setting for the eponymous film based on Ian McEwan’s novel. With its Ofsted-registered crèche, verandah, indoor play zone, outdoor sandpit and playground, tennis courts, spa treatment rooms and indoor pool, plus classic British dining served in the coastal facing restaurant and contemporary bedroom decor, Moonfleet truly has something for everyone. There’s plenty to explore nearby too, from walks along the South West Coast Path that runs along the bottom of the hotel’s garden to crabbing in Weymouth.

Summer Lodge

Summer Lodge – Evershot

Set in four acres of Hardy country, this 18th-century manor was enlarged for the Earl of Ilchester in 1893 by a local architect – Thomas Hardy himself. Today, the house is filled with beautiful fabrics, patterns and objects and the comfortable bedrooms lack for nothing; there are even fleece-covered hot-water bottles to warm your bed. The best is the garden suite in Bea’s Cottage, which has a sitting room, cocktail bar and private walled garden. For connoisseurs of drink, it’s hard to beat: sommelier Eric Zwiebel’s cellar, noted for its energetic eclecticism, is stocked with well over 300 whiskies, armagnacs and cognacs, plus 1,500 wine bins, while Steven Titman’s cooking squares up perfectly with his delightful tasting menus. There are many reasons to choose Summer Lodge – not least the boutique spa and indoor pool – but if you are planning a celebration, from four people to 70, then look no further: they orchestrate such occasions beautifully.

Deans Court Review

Deans Court – Wimbourne

Some things never change, and they are all the better for it. The Hanham family have lovingly cared for Deans Court since the Reformation, maintaining the surrounding land and the elegant redbrick Georgian house, as well as the Serpentine-walled kitchen garden – the first of its kind to be accredited by the Soil Association. Guests are invited to experience a slice of the sustainable lifestyle promoted on the estate from the comfort of two farmers’ cottages located within their own walled garden and adjoining orchard – or, just outside the main entrance, there is the seven-bedroom gate house. Altogether, the accommodation can sleep up to 26 people – handy if you’re planning a large get-together. Those that have the fishing bug will be pleased to hear that, just a short walk from your temporary abode, Deans Court has a beat on the River Allen, home to wild brown trout. Tight lines! Best of all, produce from the garden – think eggs, honey, fruit and vegetables – can be pre-ordered for your arrival.
