Feeling inspired to book a trip to the idyllic Italian island of Sicily after watching The White Lotus? Bring your appetite: Sicily is a haven for foodies, jam-packed with excellent fine dining spots, traditional trattorias and glamorous beach clubs – hence the outcry at the fact the HBO cast ate pretty much all their meals in the hotel restaurant. Here, Sicilian chef Vittorio Meli, who heads up Zoom East in Whitechapel, highlights the places they should have visited. Read on to discover his pick of the best restaurants in Sicily.

A Foodie’s Guide To Sicily

Vittorio Meli

Vittorio Meli, a Sicilian chef

Born in Catania, Sicily, Vittorio’s family have owned and run restaurants for over three generations – so the chef certainly knows his stuff when it comes to good food. He is now at the helm of Zoom East, a Sicilian restaurant in London which features traditional dishes like caponata, arancini and Stocco Alla Messinese, a fish stew with olives, potatoes and capers.

Vittorio Meli’s Pick: Best Restaurants in and Near Sicily

Pasticceria Savia, Catania

In Catania you must visit a ‘Tavola Calda Catanese’ (a Catanian ‘hot table’). These are casual restaurants or takeaways serving specialities including pizzette cartocciate and cipolline, savoury Sicilian pastries, and of course arancini. You can find Tavola Calda Catanese everywhere in the city but I especially recommend the traditional Pasticceria Savia, set at the corner between Via Etnea and Via Umberto.

Via Etnea, 300/302/304, Via Umberto I, 2/4/6, 95131 Catania CT, Italy, lnx.savia.it

Pastries at Zoom East restaurant in London

Zoom East

Trattoria Don Nino, Messina

In the North of Sicily, at one of the three extreme points of the island is the city of Messina. Stocco alla Messines (stockfish) is the most important delicacy in the city – a real tradition that has historical roots linked to the geographically favourable position of the city on the Strait and its port in the Mediterranean Sea. Trattoria Don Nino is a great place to experience a classic Messina stockfish.

V.le Europa, 39, 98124 Messina ME, Italy, facebook.com

Il Carretto, Cefalu

Cefalu is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. In the historic centre a few steps from the Cathedral Basilica you will find Il Carretto offering typical Sicilian dishes with local products from fish to meat, both served directly at the table on lava stone. In Cefalu you will also often find slow-cooked black pig sandwiches served as street food. The Black Pig of the Nebrodi Mountains near Cefalu is a native breed with ancient origins.

Via Mandralisca, 66, 90015 Cefalù PA, Italy, facebook.com

Market A’ Vucciria, Palermo

In Palermo you must visit the market ‘A’ Vucciria’, an ancient bazaar with shops and food stalls – it can be hectic, but that is part of the charm. It is a great experience and the perfect place to try an array of different dishes as well as buy fresh ingredients. There you will find food stalls serving traditional dishes such as pane e panelle – chickpea fritters inside crunchy bread with lemon and parsley; Meusa (slow-cooked spleen with sweet and sour sauce) swordfish roll, boiled octopus, and cardoons in batter.

Piazza Caracciolo, 90133 Palermo PA, Italy

Osteria Mamma Carmela, Palermo

For a quieter option I would suggest Palermo institution Osteria Mamma Carmela in Borgo Vecchio via Principe di Scordia, just a few steps away from the famous theatre Politeama. Here you will find authentic, rustic cuisine not known to many.

Trattoria Al Brigantino, Sferracavallo

Sferracavallo is a subarea very close to Palermo. It is famous throughout Sicily as a haven for seafood lovers. The Restaurant Trattoria Al Brigantino is one of the best known in Sferracavallo and offers customers typical dishes of Sicilian cuisine based on fresh fish.

Via Torretta, 104, 90147 Palermo PA, Italy

Restaurant Alla Kasbah, Mazara del Vallo

Caponata is one of the most famous dishes in Sicily and something that you absolutely must try – Restaurant Alla Kasbah in the town of Mazara del Vallo is the perfect place. There is not actually a defined recipe, because each city or village has his own – and indeed each family in Sicily has his own recipe. Here you must also try the Gambero Rosso of Mazara – red prawns that the port town is known for.

Via Itria, 10, 91026 Mazara del Vallo TP, Italy

Tha’am Restaurant, San Vito Lo Capo

Visit Tha’am restaurant, one of the most well-known restaurants in San Vito Lo Capo, to try classic Sicilian fish couscous dishes. A dish of North African origin, in Sicily couscous is cooked with fish or shellfish, and rich fish stock.

Via Duca degli Abruzzi, 32, 91010 San Vito Lo Capo TP, Italy, thaam.it

Panificio Giummarra, Ragusa

The Scacce Ragusane are a rustic and tasty dish of thin pastry with different savoury fillings, widespread in Ragusa and its province. It is difficult to find a bakery that competes with homemade scacce but in the heart of Ragusa there is the Giummarra bakery that perfectly replaces the home oven.

Via Traspontino, 23, 97100 Ragusa RG, Italy

Pasticceria Artale, Ortigia, Syracuse

If you’re visiting Ortigia, the historical centre of Syracuse located on Sicily’s south-eastern coast, I highly recommend Pasticceria Artale, an artisan bakery close to the Cathedral of Syracuse, for their sweet pastries. They also have a great lunch and dinner menu.

Via Saverio Landolina, 32, 96100 Siracusa SR, Italy, pasticceriaartale.it

Bar Girlando, Avola

Not far from the famous Syracuse on Sicily’s south-eastern coast is the coastal city of Avola where you will find Bar Girlando. Make a stop here to taste the fabulous ‘Granita di mandorle’ almond granita alongside the typical Sicilian brioche.

Viale Lido, 22, 96012 Avola SR, Italy, facebook.com

Ever since a fourth season was announced, Sex Education fans have been waiting with bated breath for the juicy details. We’ve been drip-fed snippets of information over the past year – and now, finally, we have a trailer. But this has also come with some sad news: that season four will be the final instalment of the much-loved Netflix show.

In a letter to fans, show creator Laurie Nunn explained her decision to bring the series to a close, saying: ‘We wanted to make a show that would answer some of the questions we all used to have about love, sex, friendship, and our bodies. Something that would have helped our inner teenagers feel a little less alone. It’s been overwhelming seeing how the show has connected with people around the world, and we hope it’s made some of you feel a little less alone too.

‘Writing this feels bittersweet, as we’ve decided the fourth season will also be the final instalment of our show. This was not an easy decision to make, but as the themes and stories of the new season crystallised, it became clear that this was the right time to graduate.’

Read on for everything we know so far about the final season of the TV series, including the trailer, release date, cast and plot.

Sex Education Season Four: What Do We Know So Far?

The Plot

Sex Education centres around Otis, whose mum Jean (Gillian Anderson) is a sex therapist. At his school, Moorfield, Otis joins forces with Maeve to set up a sex therapy clinic – which many of their fellow classmates visit for advice. But, when Otis and Maeve develop feelings for one another, things get complicated.

Series three was filled with all sorts of drama. The arrival of new headteacher Hope, played by Girls star Jemima Kirke, shook things up at Moordale, causing a revolt from the students. This led to the school’s investors pulling out, meaning the school must be sold to developers – and the pupils have to find new schools to complete their last year.

Sex Education

The season also ended with a cliffhanger for Otis and Maeve. Just when we thought they were finally going to be together, Maeve decides to move to America to study, telling Otis: ‘we’ll have to see where we’re at when I’m back’.

There’s also a lot going on for Jean. At the end of series three she suffers from a haemorrhage while giving birth to her baby girl. She recovers from surgery, only to be presented with the results from a paternity test – and though we don’t actually see the results, her reaction suggests the dad is not Jakob.

So, what will season four hold? Netflix has offered some details on the plot. ‘Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, while Eric is praying they won’t be losers again. But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students – they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being … kind?!

‘Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Over in the U.S., Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, while adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus.’

The Cast

Names returning for season four include: Asa Butterfield as Otis, Emma Mackey as Maeve, Ncuti Gatwa as Eric, Gillian Anderson as Jean, Aimee-Lou Wood as Aimee, Connor Swindells as Adam, Mimi Keene as Ruby, Chinenye Ezeudu as Viv, Kedar Williams-Stirling as Jackson and George Robinson as Isaac.

Eric in Sex Education

A slew of characters, however, have sadly announced they are departing from the show. That includes Bridgerton star Simone Ashley as Olivia, Tanya Reynolds as Lily, Patricia Allison as Ola, and Rakhee Thakrar as teacher Emily Sands.

New faces, meanwhile, will include Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy as Thomas, Maeve’s new college tutor, plus newcomers Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James and Imani Yahshua. Characters like Marie Reuther, Reda Elazouar and Imani Yahshua, previously small parts, will also be getting more screen time in season four.

The Trailer

Release Date

Season four will arrive on Netflix on 21 September 2023.

Season 3 of The Witcher has finally landed on Netflix, with Ghanaian actress Cassie Clare reprising her role as sorceress Philippa Eilhart. Transporting viewers to the fictional, medieval-inspired ‘Continent’, Philippa is an advisor to king Vizimir of Redania who appears in season 2, but has more of a central role in season 3. We sat down with Cassie to chat all things filming The Witcher season 3, plus learning from Julie Walters and finding the positives in life.

Interview: Cassie Clare On Playing Philippa Eilhart In The Witcher

Hi Cassie, how’s life going at the moment?

Hello! Life is going really well. Thanks for asking!

You can currently be seen in season 3 of The Witcher – can you give us a quick intro to the series for anyone unfamiliar?

I’m so excited for people to see season 3. For anyone new to the Witcher world, I would say it’s a thrilling fantasy series that has real and relatable storylines with a lot of heart.

What can viewers expect from season 3?

So many twists and turns! It really is a rollercoaster. When I first read the scripts, I was laughing, crying and gasping every few minutes as the story developed.

You play Philippa Eilhart – can you describe her?

Oh, my dear Philippa, how I love this character. I could talk for hours about her but, in short… She’s the kind of person who is always thinking 10 steps ahead.

What was it like playing her?

I learned a lot playing Philippa; she has this stillness that I don’t often have. I’m an excitable, all-singing, all-dancing kind of person. Philippa sits in stillness, observing every detail of everything and everyone around her, collecting intel before making a move or saying anything.

How did you get into character/prepare for the role?

I did a lot of preparation for this role. I have my Phillipa folder, full of information such as Witcher lore and history, maps of the continent with places like ‘where Philippa went to school’ marked, and details about her past. The folder was packed and I would read through it, listening to my ‘Philippa Playlist’ of songs I’d chosen to help me get into character. I also did short meditations to find the presence and stillness of Philippa.

Any funny stories from rehearsals or filming?

I remember one of my first rehearsals with the stunt team. I arrived a little early, so I got to watch the end of Eammon Farren and Freya Allan’s rehearsals. Both were learning fight sequences that had me applauding from the sidelines. Then I was called to my rehearsal and was taught how to whip targets on a wall. It made me chuckle thinking those two characters get right in the brawl and get messy, whereas Philippa prefers a more sniper style of attack, staying well back so as not to get her hands dirty.

What is the cast dynamic? Who was your fave person to work with?

It was such a bonus that the cast are all so lovely, as well as so talented. It was honestly a joy to work with everyone. We filmed some huge scenes where almost the whole cast were involved, and I loved those days where we were all together.

You’ve also starred in the likes of Sandman, The Irregulars, Endeavour and What Happened To Monday – what has been your favourite project to date?

That’s a tricky one, as I learn something from every role. But Philippa has to be my favourite so far. She is a very complex and layered character who is not always as she appears to be, which is challenging and so much fun to play.

Any roles in the pipeline that you’re excited about? (If you’re allowed to tell us!)

I can’t say much, but I may be returning to some roles I really enjoyed.

Who has been your favourite actor to work with in the past?

Right now, I would say Julie Walters. I learned so so much from her on Mamma Mia 2 – mostly how to balance working hard, having fun and taking care of yourself. I watched Ms Walters go from having us in hysterics in between takes, to having a power nap on a prop sofa, to jumping up and nailing every one of her scenes! She was a joy to be around.

Which co-star did you learn the most from?

Every single person I came into contact with on this production taught me something valuable – not just the cast. However, I must say Myanna Buring is the definition of a leading lady. Her leadership, strength and courage shine through at every moment. She welcomed us newbies so warmly. She really is a teacher and a guide to us all, just like her character Tissaia. I always looked forward to every time I got to work with her or be around her, and always went home after a day on set with her thinking, ‘Wow, what an amazing actress and what an amazing human!’

What’s your dream role?

I daren’t say in case I jinx it! But I will say most of my dream roles are singing and dancing powerhouses with a lot of strength and vulnerability… Can you tell I love musical theatre and strong female leads? Hehe.

What’s a genre you’d like to do more of?

I’m loving getting to delve into the fantasy world; I’m finding out about a whole world I hadn’t properly been introduced to. It’s exciting when you think about the possibilities for characters in fantasy… I mean, fantasy gave me the space to do magic and turn into an owl – it’s so fun!

Do you get to spend much time at home?

I do in between work, especially as the last few jobs I’ve done have been filming in or around London.

Do you live in the town or the country? Which do you prefer?

I have always lived in a city, but I’m starting to want more nature around me. I’m always more peaceful when I’m in nature. I’m not feeling the concrete jungle like I used to. This city never sleeps, but I love a little nap!

What’s your relationship with social media like?

I wouldn’t mind not being on socials at all – it can be a distraction for me. I have plays and film scripts I want to finish! But I can make peace with socials if I use them as a place for people to learn a bit more about the real me. I like the idea that past students I’ve taught can look through my Insta and track exactly what I’ve done – the things that worked and the things that didn’t.

How do you find balance in your personal and work lives?

I’m still working on that balance, to be honest. I can get very focused on my work and pouring all my energy into it, but then other things suffer because of that. I want to find a balance between work, family, chosen family, health and creativity. I’m close, but I haven’t quite mastered it yet.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

The first thing I remember saying I wanted to be was a choreographer. I was so young I could barely pronounce the word properly!

If you could give advice to your 15-year-old self, what would it be?

You are enough. Do not bend or shift or diminish who you are to please others. Learn that putting yourself first is not selfish because, when you take care of yourself (mind, body and soul), you will have all the love and energy to spare and you can help others properly. So, in short, be you to the fullest, and fill your cup first. There are parts of me that still think that sounds selfish, but you can’t give love and energy if your battery is empty!

How can we all live a little bit better?

By remembering that negativity breeds negativity. Our thoughts, words and actions have a ripple effect that affects us and everyone around us. We are mammals that look for negatives as a survival mechanism, and that’s OK. However, I believe that if we work on finding the positives, too – having gratitude for all the small things as well as the big things – we will have more strength to come together and make positive changes. So many times we point fingers at others, saying what they should be doing to be better, but did we even drink enough water today?! If we can take better care of our inner world – our own mind, body and soul – we will have so much more to give to those around us, and then possibly the world.

Anything fun in the pipeline – professionally or personally?

Not that I can speak about. Hehe.

Quick Fire

I’m tuning into… The kind of representation I didn’t know I needed so much as a child.

What I’m reading… The biographies of one of my idols.

The last thing I watched was… Never Have I Ever. I love it and I love shows that can teach me a bit about other cultures.

What I’m most looking forward to seeing… I’m going to be watching I Wanna Dance With Somebody over and over again. Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston was brilliant!

Favourite film of all time… It’s always between Singing in the Rain or West Side Story. Probably West Side Story right now.

Singer I always have on repeat… What I listen to reflects my mood at the time, so there is a lot of jumping between genres and singers. I don’t listen to any particular artist on repeat.

My ultimate cultural recommendation… Try roller skating! There are great roller discos in London, and groups of skaters having fun in Hyde Park on sunny days. It’s more fun than squats at the gym, but the results are the same.

Cultural guilty pleasure… It’s only a guilty pleasure right now because I feel that I talk about it non stop… But get yourself to the theatre and see a musical! Too many people deny themselves the escapism and joy that a musical can bring, and why!? Because it’s unrealistic to burst into song? Well I wish we lived into a world where we could burst into song to express ourselves! Ha!

What’s next for me is… I’ll be over here, focusing on growing as a person and refining my creative skills.

Parting words… Sending love and respect to all, have a wonderful day.

Streaming giant Netflix recently confirmed a whole host of season renewals at its 2023 Tudum fan event in Brazil – including Squid Game season 2. Here’s everything we know so far.

Everything We Know So Far About Squid Game Season 2

Just under two years after the first season captivated audiences across the globe when it debuted in September 2021, Netflix has confirmed a second season of the much loved South Korean thriller series, Squid Game. The news comes hand-in-hand with the announcement of a new Squid Game-inspired competition series – Squid Game: The Challenge – along with teasers for the likes of Elite, Bridgerton, Emily in Paris and YOU at Netflix’s annual Tudum fan event.

The Cast

Netflix has confirmed that Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-Hun, Wi Ha-jun and Gong Yoo will all be returning to Squid Game for season 2. Plus, it announced newcomers – or ‘new players’ – Yim Si-Wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-Hoon and Yang Dong-Geun. Watch the teaser and cast announcement below.

Netflix also recently revealed on Instagram that Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won and Won Ji-an will all also appear in the series. Spy some mildly concerned facial expressions at a recent table read below.

What Will Happen In Squid Game Season 2?

To quote Lee Jung-jae, ‘the main plot of season 2 will be revenge’. The first season of Squid Game left Seong Gi-hun (Jung-jae’s character) in a somewhat sticky situation. The divorced father and indebted gambler remains traumatised by his experiences in the secret contest, which he was the sole survivor of after his childhood friend, Cho Sang-woo, kills himself in the final eponymous Squid Game rather than having Gi-hun kill him. He is so traumatised, in fact, that he hasn’t touched his prize winnings. When he is contacted by Oh Il-nam (O Yeong-su) and directed to his hospital bedside, we discover that the old man Gi-hun befriended and betrayed in the game was in fact one of the creators behind the whole thing. The two converse, and Gi-hun dies of his brain tumour, leading Gi-hun, in his grief and continued trauma, to dye his hair a shockingly bright red.

While Gi-hun continues to tie up the loose ends and honour the dying requests of his fellow competitors, we discover that his ex-wife emigrated to the USA while he was held captive in the game – along with his daughter. On his way to the airport to visit his daughter – and potentially repair their strained relationship – Gi-hun spots a game of ddakji, the same game that tied him up in the blood-soaked competition. Intercepting the same contact card he was given (and telling the desperate ddakji player never to call the number written on it), Gi-hun calls the number, but is swiftly told by the speaker on the other end of the call to board his plane and leave South Korea. But Gi-hun is having none of it. In fact, he does the opposite, and the series ends with Gi-hun turning on his heel and leaving the airport.

All of this is to say that the season finale answered a few questions – but it raised quite a few more. And we’re hoping season 2 will come with fresh information along with those fresh faces. But what will actually happen? Well, as well as ‘revenge’, we expect to see more of Hwang Jun-ho (played by Wi Ha-joon) – the police officer who, on the hunt to find his missing brother, sneaks into the game and disguises himself as a guard – to take a more central role. Could he team up with Gi-hun to take down the competition creators? And, with the teaser involving new cast members choosing between a red and green gameshow-style button, we expect a return of the first season’s competition dimension. Plus, with that spooky childish voice we came to know so well, could it be that Netflix is hinting at a return of the notorious red light green light game?

The red light green light game in Squid Game

© Netflix (cropped)

Likewise, don’t rule out any returns from the dead. In 2022, director-writer Hwang Dong-hyuk told Reuters: ‘I want to revive Ji-young [played by Lee Yoo-mi], but her best friend Sae-byeok [played by HoYeon Jung] also died, so I’m thinking what to do. So many characters died, especially beloved ones died. I’m sorry I killed them so easily; I didn’t know this [season 2] was coming.’

With even the director having no plans for a second season when the first was released, Squid Game season 2 theories are wide-reaching. We expect to see more broke South Koreans participating in deadly games and to learn more about the bored and moneyed people behind the games (like Oh Il-nam) but, other than that, it’s anyone’s guess. But we’ll keep updating this article as more information is revealed.

When Will Squid Game Season 2 Be Released?

Squid Game season 2 will land on Netflix in 2024. Can’t wait until then? In the meantime, you can rewatch the first season, or get excited for November 2023 when Squid Game: The Challenge – which, by the way, was filmed in Bedfordshire – will arrive on Netflix.

An unassuming Welsh National League football club, Wrexham FC, came into the spotlight in a big way recently after being bought by two Hollywood stars: Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The pair documented their journey in a TV series which pans out like a real-life Ted Lasso – from why they picked Wrexham in the first place to their efforts to transform the club. But it turns out Reynolds and McElhenney aren’t the only celebrities investing in football clubs. Stormzy, for instance, recently became joint owner of AFC Croydon, joining a league of other A-list names with ties to the sport. Read on to discover which football clubs have surprising famous faces at the helm.

You might know Reynolds for his movies (whether that’s The Proposal or Deadpool) – but the Hollywood star has many other strings to his bow. He has invested in everything from gin to dating apps over the years – and in November 2020, Reynolds bought Wrexham FC alongside McElhenney. Since then, the duo have heralded a new chapter for the club: in April 2023, Wrexham won promotion to the Football League after 15 seasons of playing in the semi-amateur National League. ‘This is the third-oldest club on the planet and we don’t see why it can’t have a global appeal,’ said Reynolds. ‘We want Wrexham to be a global force.’

Multi-award winning rapper Stormzy is one of the most recent celebrities to own a football club, buying AFC Croydon alongside Manchester United player Wilfried Zaha. Both of them grew up in south London, which played a part in their decision, and the pair joined forces with Danny Young, former Crystal Palace head of player care, Danny Young, on the purchase. A statement from the club confirmed the three-part consortium will ‘own, operate and develop their childhood hometown football club’, adding: ‘whilst completion is subject to legislative and governance procedures, the three consortium members are excited about developing a community asset in the borough that gave them their own opportunities.’

David Beckham: Inter Miami

He may have retired from football a decade ago, but David Beckham is still involved in the beautiful game in other ways – including by co-owning Inter Miami in America. The seeds for this were sown many years back in 2007, when the former England captain shocked the football world by making a move to the US, joining LA Galaxy. There were rumours that his contract included an option to buy an ‘expansion franchise’ when his playing days were over – which he confirmed in 2009, telling the BBC: ‘I have the right to own an MLS franchise, which I will action immediately after I have stopped playing.’ As a result of this, Inter Miami was founded in 2018 and, in 2021, it was announced that Beckham had bought stakes of ownership in the club, alongside the Mas brothers Jose and Jorge. It’s believed that Beckham played a big part in getting Lionel Messi to join the club this summer.

Delia Smith is one of the most famous TV chefs of our time – but did you know she is also the co-owner of Norwich City FC? She purchased shares in the club alongside her husband Michael Wynn-Jones back in 1996, and the pair have remained at the helm ever since, supporting the team through three Championship titles, seven seasons in the Premier League, financial crises and much more.

Will Ferrell: Los Angeles FC

Comedian and actor Will Ferrell is a big football fan – so much so that, in 2016, he became co-owner of his home ground team, Los Angeles FC. He is part of a large investment team that includes names like basketball legend Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson and YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley. In its relatively short history, Los Angeles FC has seen many successes, including winning its first-ever MLS Cup title in 2022.

He might be one of the most famous musicians in the world, but music isn’t Sir Elton John’s only passion. The 76-year-old is also a die-hard football fan with a long-standing connection to his home football club, Watford FC. John bought the club in 1976, overseeing its rise through four divisions to the top of the league. Although he stepped down as Chairman in 2002, the global superstar remained the club’s Honorary Life-President, and is as big a supporter as ever today. John has performed there a number of times over the years, including a particularly memorable performance in 1974 when he dressed up as a black and yellow hornet in honour of the team’s nickname.

Have you watched Hijack on Apple TV+ yet? Led by Idris Elba and told in real time, the seven-part thriller follows the journey of a hijacked plane on a seven-hour flight to London. Playing honeymooner Jamie Constantinou is BAFTA nominated actress Aimée Kelly, who you might recognise from the likes of This Is England, Grantchester and Call The Midwife. We sat down with Aimée to chat all things Hijack.

Hi Aimee, how’s life going at the moment?

Life is good, thank you!

You can currently be seen in Hijack opposite Idris Elba – can you give us an elevator pitch for the show?

Our show is a seven part series for Apple TV following a plane from Dubai to London. It’s a high octane thriller starring Idris Elba.

You play Jamie Constantinou – can you describe her?

Jamie is the female Hijacker. She is a woman in a man’s world and the sole female villain of the series.

What was it like playing her?

I had such a blast playing Jamie. It’s not often you get to play a character that causes so much terror – especially as a female. Each episode was more daring and was so fun to execute.

How did you get into character/prepare for the role?

In almost every scene, I was carrying a gun which definitely helped me get into character quickly.

What was it like working with Idris Elba?

Idris is an extremely generous actor and teammate. He was always opening up discussion and making space to elevate the scenes.

Any standout moments from rehearsals or filming?

There is usually super strict Covid protocols whilst filming and, because we were shooting in a studio that had to be large enough to fit an airplane, quite often the cast would hang out in a cast tent close to set instead of going all the way back to our trailers. We were all hanging one day and the Covid team turned up to say the tent did not meet protocol and so they cut the roof off the tent whilst we were in it, and for the rest of the six months we very oddly made a home of our Covid friendly roofless tent!

You’ve also starred in the likes of Sket, The Personal History of David Copperfield and This Is England. What has been your favourite project to date?

They all have their own cast mates, locations and memories attached to them, so its hard to say, but this shoot in particular was so long. We were together for seven months, so we definitely formed a special bond during that time.

Who has been your favourite actor to work with in the past?

Both Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent were such great actors to work with and learn from. They both have such good work ethics and sense of humour.

Which co-star did you learn the most from?

Niel Maskell is such a great actor. He was brilliant to work alongside in Hijack. He is now a great friend and advice giver.

What’s your dream role?

Dream role changes from time to time, but I’d love to do a musical. I trained in musical theatre and went straight into acting, so would love to cross pollinate!

What’s a genre you’d like to try or do more of?

I recently shot a series adapted from a novel. It’s a ghost story which I’d never done before and it was fun. So perhaps more supernatural or sci-fi.

Aimee Kelly in Hijack

Do you get to spend much time at home?

I do. I have two sausage dogs, so if I’m not working or at home, they make sure I am walking them.

Do you live in the town or the country? Which do you prefer?

I currently live in London, and I was born and raised in Newcastle so, although I love city life, I want to eventually end up in the countryside. Somewhere with clean air. Hopefully the Cotswolds.

What’s your relationship with social media like?

It ebbs and flows. It can be so dangerous and addictive, but in other ways so useful to educate or spread messages. You have to know when to stop, so I always have a usage limit on mine.

How do you find balance in your personal and work lives?

I love the job that I do, so I don’t feel it requires too much separation. I am a massive reader, so to switch off I am always reading my book.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

When I was little, I wanted to be a detective so I have no idea how I’ve ended up here haha!

How can we all live a little bit better?

Niel Maskell actually once told me ‘all anyone needs is patience, kindness and encouragement’, and I think that’s a pretty good one to have in the back of your mind. Environmentally, there’s always room for everyone to make improvements!

Anything fun in the pipeline – professionally or personally?

I have a series called Platform 7 on ITVX being released in December.

Quick Fire

What I’m reading… Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

Succession shaped hole in your heart? If you haven’t tuned in to Riches on ITVX yet, now is your chance to catch it: the six-part drama is now airing weekly on Friday nights on ITV1 at 9pm, starting tonight (30 June). The show follows an uber rich family, the Richards, whose patriarch, Stephen (Hugh Quarshie), owns Flair & Glory, a Black hair and beauty empire. Fiery family matriarch, Claudia, is played by Sarah Niles, who you might recognise from Ted Lasso, and who we sat down with to talk all things Riches, being cast into the limelight, and life off-screen.

Interview: Sarah Niles On ITV’s Riches

Sarah Niles as Claudia in Riches

© ITV

Hi Sarah, how’s life going at the moment?

It’s busy!! Booked and busy as they say!

You star in ITV’s Riches – can you give any readers unfamiliar with the show a quickfire pitch?

A drama about a rich family vying for control of the most successful family branded hair business. It’s a rich BRITISH Black family with ties to Nigeria, the Caribbean and America, making it all the more culturally rich!

What can we expect from the series?

A funeral, family infighting, secrets, deception, Black hair politics and good Dynasty-esque fun!

You play Claudia – how would you describe her?

She’s a determined woman, put it that way! She’ll burn any bridge that no longer serves her! She’s sexy, manipulative, cunning, but ultimately a real survivor. A lovable villain. She’ll stop at nothing to get what she wants – also for her kids, but mostly for herself!

What was it like playing her?

Fun! She’s sexy and messy. I loved that. We hardly ever see women of that age seen that way on screen, especially older Black British female characters! She’s also formidable. I was keen to bring in more that reflected the complexity of these types of women – how they’ve had to rise up and cling on to what they have. One minute you hate her, and love her the next!

How did you get into character/prepare for the role?

I always thought about her armour – how she wanted to be seen. I also worked out that that goes hand in hand with what this woman wants. In every situation, what does she want to get in every scene? That’s Claudia. She’s always looking to survive and if she doesn’t sit on top, well, to her, it means death.

Any standout moments from rehearsals or filming?

The way we all seemed like a family. We just slotted into our roles very early on.

What is the cast dynamic? Who was your fave person to work with?

The cast bonded so much so quickly. I clicked pretty quickly with Deborah Ayorinde (Nina); we’d laugh so much in between takes and genuinely had mutual respect and love for each other. But, when the camera rolled, we’d be at each other’s throats!

Our readers might also recognise you from the likes of I May Destroy You and Ted Lasso. What has been your favourite project to date?

All of them for many different reasons. I filmed Sandman while doing Ted Lasso, and the characters were like chalk and cheese. I love the chance to play. I feel, though, Dr Sharon has had such an impact on my career (it got me Emmy nominated) and on people. Playing her propelled me into a level of limelight where I’m recognised everywhere I go. It’s mad!

Brett Goldstein and Sarah Niles in "Ted Lasso,"

Brett Goldstein and Sarah Niles in “Ted Lasso,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

Any roles in the pipeline that you’re excited about? (If you’re allowed to tell us!)

I’m always excited about who I’ll be working with next! So I have two films working with a great cast – that’s all I can say!

Which character that you have played in the past do you relate to the most in your own life?

I try to relate to all of them, because I try to bring a level of care and love to them. I am always interested in the duality of a character. People are never really one thing.

Who has been your favourite actor to work with in the past?

That’s hard. I’ve worked with some talented and kind people. Kindness is key to that – and the ability to make me belly laugh! Which isn’t hard at all!

Which co-star did you learn the most from?

I learn different things from different people. I always stay open to that.

What’s your dream role?

For a long time it was Winnie Mandela… But I’m not sure – it’s always changing.

What’s a genre you’d like to do more of?

Sci Fi, horror, fantasy. Ah, I know I gave you three. Too many to choose from.

Do you get to spend much time at home?

I try to when I can. I love gardening.

Do you live in the town or the country? Which do you prefer?

I live in town, tucked away though so it’s quiet. I do dream about living in the country now and again.

How do you find balance in your personal and work lives?

My family and friends. Music. Singing and dancing around the house! Gardening!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

What I’m doing now.

If you could give advice to your 15-year-old self, what would it be?

Be patient and also grab adventure when and where you can. Please be patient with yourself, too – it will turn out OK.

How can we all live a little bit better?

Finding opportunities to be more kind to each other. Talking to neighbours. Staying off our phones a bit more!

Anything fun in the pipeline – professionally or personally?

Always!

Quick Fire

I’m tuning into… Afua Hirsch’s Africa Rising, Silo, The Bear, Beef

What I’m reading… The How by Ysra Daley-Ward and Night Sky With Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong

The last thing I watched was… Succession’s final season

What I’m most looking forward to seeing… Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Fremont Cassandra

Favourite film of all time… Imitation of Life, Crooklyn, The Producers and Blazing Saddles fight it out for first place when the mood takes me!

Band/singer I always have on repeat… It’s Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Prince, Sons of Kemet, Roots Manuva

My ultimate cultural recommendation… Anything at Autograph gallery, Now Gallery, the reopening of the National Portrait Gallery – all of which I’m long overdue a visit.

Cultural guilty pleasure… Rotis, fish cakes, rum punch! Nothing to feel guilty about! It’s pure pleasure!

What’s next for me is… Finding ways to enjoy the present and opportunities to spread my wings!

Riches airs weekly on ITV1 from Friday 30 June at 9pm.

Fans of The Witcher: season three is fast approaching, and Therica Wilson-Read is returning as fiery sorceress Sabrina Glevissig. We sat down with Therica to chat all things season three, wearing specific perfume to enter a character’s headspace, and starring in the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black.

Interview: Therica Wilson-Read On Playing Sabrina Glevissig In The Witcher

Therica Wilson Read

Hi Therica, how’s life going at the moment?

It’s very exciting. I always find there is a mix of terror and excitement when a show is coming out. I can’t wait to see what people think, and to show the hard work everyone in the cast and crew has done. Robert Breeson once said that ‘a film is born three times. First in the writing of the script, once again in the shooting and finally in the editing’ – so there is a magic and nervous energy at seeing how the show has changed since you were on set.

You’re about to return as Sabrina Glevissig in The Witcher – can you give us an elevator pitch for the show for anyone who hasn’t watched before?

Here goes… The Witcher is an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books. Set in a mediaeval dark fantasy world rife with political unrest, a monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia, finds and fights for his family constantly battling against monsters – some beasts, some human.

What can viewers expect from the new season?

I’m nervous to give any spoilers away, but there are so many exciting things happening in season three. This season is based on the ‘Time of Contempt’ and, to name a few things mentioned by others, the family unit of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri are reunited (but for how long?), Jaskier falls in love, there is a battlefield of political corruption…

For Sabrina, she battles what she thinks is the right thing to do and the fall out of losing people she deeply loves. You may also see her try and seduce as well as deepening friendships and rivalries.

Can you describe Sabrina?

She is powerful, feisty, opinionated and influential in the political arena. She’s incredibly confident in what she thinks and her body, and doesn’t like to be proved wrong or to be second best. She uses anything and everything to gain and maintain power. However, underneath all of this she was never fully accepted by her mother, and showed her grievance by turning her mother fat. She is fiercely loyal to the people she loves, even Yennefer – albeit she hates to show it.

What is it like playing her?

Sabrina brought out a confidence in me that I really didn’t know I had. Yes, she has her insecurities and moments of vulnerability but, for the most part, she’s incredibly sure of herself which feels empowering to play. However, she can also be cutting and mean at points which, although is fun to play with, never feels so good in my body. When she’s fun, she’s very fun. When she’s mean, she’s very mean. When she loves, she loves so deep she risks her life for that person.

This is your third season as Sabrina – is it a comfortable character to play now?

Yes and no. The writers are constantly developing her arc and, as the show grows, her relationships deepen and she meets new people, you always find out more about her character. She does feel like a second skin in that I know how she moves, thinks and how she approaches different scenarios. With every season, though, I go back to the books, games and rewatch the previous seasons to try to centre myself in her world. I do also have to say thank you to the hair, makeup and costume team, as they go hand in hand in creating Sabrina.

How has it felt being part of such a hugely successful show?

When we started filming back in season one, I didn’t and couldn’t have ever comprehended how big the show would become. I did, however, know that there was a great fan base from the books and the games, so I buried myself in both to try and bring aspects of both to the role. It sometimes feels incredibly surreal knowing that the work you do will be seen by so many people.

How do you get into character?

Each character is different, so I try to find the things about each that are similar and different from who I am as a person. I do a lot of prep and development before getting onto set. For Sabrina, in particular, having hair, makeup and costume really helps, as you walk out looking completely different to how you entered at 5am; you hold yourself in a different way with heels and hair that hits your waist. I also find a particular song which I think represents her each season and listen to it before going on set. I chose a perfume for Sabrina – Le Labo Lis 41 – which is different from my own. The act of copiously spritzing that on myself really settles me into the role.

What is the cast dynamic? Who was your fave person to work with?

It is very much a family, and coming to set and working with everyone is such a pleasure. You are with each other for very long days and a long shoot schedule, so you get to know each other pretty well. MyAnna Buring has been a pillar of strength throughout these three seasons. Watching her work was and is a masterclass and every season. I learn so much from the scenes we share together. The dynamic between the sorceresses (Anna, Anya and Mimi) is lovely and probably the most fun to film. It is a really encouraging atmosphere where everyone wants the others to succeed and do the best they can on and off set. We have recently had a lot of growth in the sorceresses we have. I can’t say too much, but I really do think the fans will love the amazing new faces that are joining us.

Did you say you read the books? Was that before or after you got the role?

When I received the audition, I was given sides with a different character’s name. I immediately bought all the books and went on a frantic search trying to find this mysterious character. I actually went into Sophie Holland’s office clasping one of those books very nervously. From then on, yes, I read them all, and do go back to reread bits (if not all) of them before each season. I also sometimes cheat and find myself on Witcher Wiki, or watching YouTube videos that do comprehensive summaries to remind myself of character arcs.

Therica Wilson Read

You’re also going to star in Back to Black – can you tell us anything about that?

Back to Black was a fantastic film I was fortunate to recently work on with Marisa Abela and Jack O’Connell, directed by Sam Taylor Johnson. To participate in a film about Amy Winehouse was incredibly moving for me. In the trajectory of Amy’s career, I could perceive the variety of ways in which she was hounded by the media from all the news articles I had seen growing up. It is wonderful to play a part in spreading awareness of the issues she was battling with in the hope it will help others, as well as being respectful and kind to her memory.

What has been your favourite project to date?

You love making me pick a favourite, but I wouldn’t be able to choose! Each project I have done – whether that be The Witcher, Stop Motion, Back to Black or Coyote – has taught me so much and has always been with an incredible cast and crew. I have been very lucky in that aspect. I may have to pick The Witcher though, as it has such a special place in my heart.

Do you get to spend much time at home?

Oh yes, I am such a homebody and love it there. I have an apartment that feels so peaceful. It’s slightly miscellaneous and full of (probably dying) plants. It feels like this zen little island in the middle of busy London. The only thing that isn’t so peaceful is that I have a rather large fluffy rescue cat who manages to moult no matter how much I brush him, so I spend a lot of my day picking up hairballs off the floor.

Do you live in the town or the country? Which do you prefer?

I live in London and probably wouldn’t change that any time soon. I love being in nature and taking time away from the city, but I love how busy London is – how there are copious different places opening up, different things to see, new people to meet and reconnecting with old friends. I am a big foodie as well, so one of my favourite things is finding new restaurants.

How do you find balance in your personal and work lives?

Life sometimes feels like that saying, ‘When it rains, it pours’. I will have periods of quiet and then suddenly everything is happening at once. I try to meditate most days, even if it’s for 10 minutes, and limit how much I spend looking at a screen.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Both of my parents are such inspirations to me, and I watched both of them work incredibly hard. There was part of me that wanted to follow in the footsteps of my mum and be in the medical field, and another part of me wanted to be a lawyer. In fact, there were lots of jobs I wanted when I was younger, but acting was really the one thing that stayed constant.

If you could give advice to your 15-year-old self, what would it be?

I would give so much advice to that 15-year-old girl! However, if it was just one thing, it would be to be kinder to yourself. That, and probably don’t quit playing the cello.

Quick Fire

What I’m reading… The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk

The last thing I watched was… Succession

What I’m most looking forward to seeing… Killers of the Flower Moon directed by Martin Scorsese

Favourite film of all time… Too many to name, but The Intouchables with Omar Sy and Francois Cluzet. I used to watch Titanic and Moulin Rouge on repeat growing up.

Band/singers I always have on repeat… Whitney Houston, Taylor Swift and Hanz Zimmer

My ultimate cultural recommendation… The V&A

Cultural guilty pleasure…  The Office US – it never fails to make me laugh.

It’s official: Netflix‘s popular stalker drama is returning for a fifth and final season, with Penn Badgley taking centre stage as Joe/Will/Jonathan for the final time. Here’s everything we know so far.

YOU Season 5: Everything We Know So Far

From New York to Los Angeles, Paris to London, YOU arrived on Netflix in 2018 after premiering on Lifetime in the US, and has now been renewed for a fifth and final season. The news was teased at Netflix’s recent TUDUM fan event in Brazil, with Penn Badgley himself addressing fans of the show, with an ‘Hola, Brazil!’

The popular series follows Penn as Joe Goldberg, a bookseller with a shady past, as he falls in love with a writer named Guinevere Beck. But, for various blood-soaked reasons, with season two comes a new location (Los Angeles) and love interest: Love Quinn. And in season three it’s off to the Californian suburbs and it’s Marienne Bellamy who catches Joe’s eye. And in season four we’re in London, swooning over Kate Galvin-Lockwood. All of this is to say that Joe (who adopts a new identity with each new city and love interest) is a hopeless romantic who falls in love hard – with quite a few dramatic consequences.

Joe strolling through South Kensington, a london filming location in You

What Will Happen In Season 5 of YOU?

In season five, we expect a return to New York City. In Penn’s teaser, he addresses fans, saying: ‘I’ve heard you’re on the edge of your seats waiting and theorising about the epic conclusion to YOU. More importantly, you’re considering what – or should I say who – Joe will come up against as he finally returns to New York.

‘Though I can’t say who just yet, we all know there are many loose ends from Joe’s past. The question is, who are you?’ Penn says. Cryptic indeed.

Season four left us in London, with Joe and Kate in front of the camera pursuing philanthropic causes and rehabilitating Joe’s image after information regarding the dramatic end to his marriage to Love Quinn in season three comes to light. So, who exactly will Joe come up against? With a return to season one’s setting and Guinevere Beck’s memoir, The Dark Face of Love, referenced a handful of times throughout the series, we expect season five to have something to do with YOU‘s first leading lady. Plus, the teaser ends with Penn saying, ‘I’ll see you in Mooney’s’, a reference to the bookshop Joe manages in season one, and where Joe and Beck met for the first time. Of course, spoilers, Beck is dead – but we’re looking to Dr Nicky, Beck’s therapist, who was framed by Joe and imprisoned for Beck’s murder. Not exactly a watertight conviction, we consider this a ‘loose end’ indeed. In Penn’s teaser, a series of faces from the past pop up, including Dr Nicky, who is played by John Stamos.

Who else could it be? There’s also a flash of Marienne (Tati Gabrielle), who remains alive despite Joe’s best efforts. Plus, there’s a flash of Nadia (Amy Leigh-Hickman), who Joe framed for his murder of her friend, Edward, after Nadia learned all about Joe’s storied past. Lady Phoebe also appears on screen looking especially fearful; again, though she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in season four, she remains alive. In short, there are lots of skeletons in Joe’s closet – but lots of living, breathing enemies, too.

When Is Season 5 Of YOU Released?

There’s no official release date yet, but we expect a premiere sometime in 2024, with the season most likely split into two halves like season four.

Catch up with seasons one to four of YOU on Netflix.
