And if you can’t travel…

We also called on Dominique Antiglio, Sophrologist and founder of BeSophro to get some expert advice on choosing meditation locations…

‘Sophrology is a type of dynamic meditation that I love to practice because it can be easily incorporated into daily life. I have had amazing Sophrology experiences at the Ghats in Varanasi, India which faces the Ganges River, as well as being wrapped up among the mountains of Courmayeur facing Mont Blanc, and also in Ibiza when facing the sea. I also love practising early morning on Primrose Hill as it offers such a beautiful view over London, and no two days are ever the same so I have a unique view each time.’

But you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home. ‘For best practice at home, I advise people to create a private space at home or in the office with a comfy chair. If you have a small, shared space only, don’t let it stop you, as you can put your headphones on and listen via a guided practice.

‘You may wish to personalise your space with a photo of a loved one or have an item of sentimental value nearby to enhance the connection of the space to your inner world. You could also light a scented candle to create a sense of calm and tranquillity in your space.

‘Personally, I have a comfy chair in my light, airy and minimalist office where I love to sit and start my Sophrology meditation practice mid-morning. I usually have a cup of herbal tea nearby to drink when I finish too. I also practice in between meetings, and even on the Tube and in taxis – if I feel tense, just five minutes of simple breathing and relaxation techniques is enough to relax me.’

So if you do make it to one of our ultimate meditation locations, you’ll have to pack the memories up to take home with you, back to your hardwood floor with the number 32 bus outside, to conjure up the images of your retreat as you find your inner calm on demand…

Maintaining a vegan diet is tricky: you can avoid eating meat quite easily, but dairy often creeps into products and dishes unexpectedly. Eating out at a restaurant (that isn’t specifically designed for vegan customers) can feel like a minefield – and some wines aren’t even vegan due to ingredients used in the fining process. And this is all in the UK, a nation with one of the highest proportions of vegans in the world – so vegan travel is a whole other question. Nations such as India, Australia, New Zealand and Israel similarly have widespread veganism, so make a great place to start. Here are some more vegan travel ideas for your next plant-based adventure.

Read the C&TH Responsible Tourism Guide

The Best Destinations For Vegan Travel

the beach club at palmaia, a predominantly vegan hotel in mexico

Palmaia – The House of AïA, Mexico

Mexico

With its plethora of cheese and sour cream, fish and meat, you might doubt Mexico’s vegan travel potential. In reality, Mexico’s balmy climate puts large, colourful fruits and vegetables at the centre of the cuisine. Just walk through one of the many vibrant markets, and you’ll be in veggie heaven. Likewise, staple Mexican ingredients include tortillas, beans, rice and avocado – all vegan friendly by default.

STAY: After exploring cities like Oaxaca and Mexico City, head to the Riviera Maya on the Caribbean coast to experience Palmaïa – The House of AïA, a predominantly plant-based resort with seven bars and restaurants. Resident executive chef Carlos Garcia (aka Chef Charly) is adept at layering flavours and textures, using vegan ingredients from local farmers to create incredible dishes.

BOOK: Rooms from £1,039 per night based on two sharing an Ocean Front Queen or King Suite on an all-inclusive basis, including unrestricted access to daily wellness classes, all à la carte meals and beverages, pool and beachside service, bike-sharing service, Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service and more. thehouseofaia.com

Soneva Fushi

Soneva Fushi, Maldives (c) Julia Neeson

Maldives

The Maldives is at the forefront of sustainable travel, with plastic-free resorts on the archipelago long before paper straws hit the mainstream. And, while fish is a staple Maldivian food, meat consumption is discouraged as it has to be imported, creating large carbon footprints for animal product dishes.

STAY: Soneva Fushi’s new Shades of Green restaurant is located in the resort’s organic garden, featuring a menu curated by renowned Danish chef Carsten Kyster, drawing inspiration from his work and travels across Southeast Asia. Furthermore, every meal at Shades of Green begins with a guided tour around the gardens, with guests invited to engage with the food they’re about to eat, touching it, smelling it, and tasting it.

BOOK: Seven nights half-board from £7,979, including seaplane transfers and international flights, until 17 Dec 22. turquoiseholidays.co.uk

an aerial shot of the sea lapping onto the beach at Salt of Palmar

Salt of Palmar

Mauritius

With a long history of vegetarian cuisine, this little Indian Ocean island is a haven for vegan travel, from hotels to fine-dining to street food. Home-grown vegetables are ubiquitous in Mauritius, with many farms available to visit and weekly farmers markets, too.

STAY: SALT of Palmar is an adults-only, design-led hotel, crafted for food lovers and culture vultures. Their latest plant-based offering, the Keen on Green menu, brings local producers (or ‘SALT Shakers’) into contact with guests, to immerse them in Mauritian culture and experience local farms. Peanut butter lovers will also be glad to know that you can make your own peanut butter for breakfast at SALT.

BOOK: Scott Dunn offers seven nights at SALT of Palmar at £1,400 per person, based on two people sharing on a bed and breakfast basis, including private road transfers and international return economy flights. scottdunn.com

a blue train on the nine arch bridge in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka (c) gemmmm via Unsplash

Sri Lanka

Teardrop-shaped Sri Lanka is an ideal vegan travel destination – albeit unintentionally. With ingredients like coconut milk and rice at the heart of a cuisine fuelled by seasonal produce, Sri Lankan food is vibrant, fresh and flavourful (and also often quite spicy – so spice haters, beware). Just make sure your meal is not cooked with ghee, which is sometimes used instead of coconut oil.

STAY: Thotalagala is a restored tea plantation and boutique hotel, well-located between Sri Lanka’s lush mountains and the descent towards the south coast and the jungles of Yala and Udawalawe. The intimate dining room serves traditional plantation fare, with a team of chefs well-equipped to serve authentic cuisine to a variety of dietary requirements.

BOOK: From £354.86 per night based on two sharing a double room. mrandmrssmith.com

Amandari

Amandari, Bali, Indonesia

Bali, Indonesia

The Best Resorts In The Maldives

Why Does Everyone Go The Maldives?

The Maldives is a popular destination for unparalleled island vibes, crystal clear waters, and the ultimate in luxurious relaxation. This archipelagic country in the Indian Ocean sets the bar very high when it comes to island getaways. Overwater stays (often with slides from your bedroom to the sea) come as standard, and the secluded desert island vibe is guaranteed. World class hotels are in the majority, with many occupying their own private islands and hosting world-class spas, sustainability labs, underwater restaurants and more. There are also lush jungles to explore, as well as reefs to observe (and protect). Treehouse bars nestle along coastlines, lagoon spas offer the perfect place to relax, and conservation programmes set the standard high.

Which Island Is The Best In The Maldives?

Picking your Maldives holiday by island is almost impossible, since there are more than a thousand, most of which are tiny. It’s much better to consider your destination by hotel, which is why we’re here to help. Another consideration is the journey time and method, since some are reachable by boat, whereas others require a (more expensive) sea plane to reach.

When Is The Best Time To Visit The Maldives?

The Maldives is a famous winter sun destination, offering a slice of white sand, blue sky and turquoise ocean amid the northern hemisphere’s wintery gloom. That said, the Maldives is a dreamy location to visit year-round, so don’t let the winter sun popularity deter you from pursuing your Maldivian dreams at another time of the year. Check out our full guide on when to visit the Maldives here.

Is It Sustainable To Go To The Maldives?

Ecotourism and the Maldives is a tricky topic to navigate. Overtourism remains a huge risk for many of the world’s most beautiful destinations, but ecotourism also represents a lifeline to many at-risk countries. Costa Rica provides a model of how tourism can transform a country at risk of environmental destruction. The Maldives relies on tourism for its economic survival, and increasingly sustainability initiatives provide a lifeline for the ecological survival of this archipelagic nation. Speak to your hotel about their sustainability initiatives and consider how you could leave a positive impact during your stay, whether this is a financial or physical contribution to the community and/or the conservation of this beautiful destination. Check out our dedicated guide to sustainable resorts in the Maldives here.

The Best Hotels In The Maldives

There are over 100 resorts in the Maldives, scattered across the archipelago’s 1,200 islands. But where to start, and how to choose the best? Here’s our guide to the best hotels the Maldives has to offer.

Photo 1 of
Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands

Ritz-Carlton Maldives

Fari Islands

Like the recently opened Patina Maldives, the Ritz-Carlton forms part of a triptych of resorts on Fari Islands, a man made archipelago on the North Malé Atoll, which when complete will also include a new property from Capella Hotels & Resorts.

Spread over a trio of islands, this 100-villa property was the last project for architect Kerry Hill, who set a new design standard for the Maldives with a concept that takes its cues from the ‘notion of completeness’ with lots of circular shapes and sensuous curves.

These can be found throughout, from the resort’s magnificent ring-shaped spa to the glorious overwater villas. Here, dressed in an understated palette of neutral materials and natural, tactile textures, the space seamlessly flows from the inside to the outside, where a curved deck and pool merge into the sparkling sea beyond.

The resort itself is intimate in size with the majority of the restaurants located on Culinary Island. This includes IWAU, an outdoor Japanese restaurant; Summer Pavilion, which serves tapas-style modern Chinese fare in a lantern-inspired space perched over the velvety lagoon; and La Locanda, which serves breakfast by morning and transforms into a Southern Italian restaurant for lunch and dinner.

The Beach Shack, at the very end of the third island, is pure beachside bliss, where a crowd-pleasing menu of dishes from refreshing salads to burgers can be enjoyed against the lazy lap of the crystalline waters, as paddle boarders drift past in the distance.

As for its green credentials, the resort’s sustainability programme includes an efficient approach to gastronomy, and design elements that include sustainably sourced timber, solar panels, as well as a dedicated plant that provides the resort’s still and sparkling water.

Eco Travel Trends and Sustainable Destinations

Patina Maldives, Fari Islands

Patina Maldives

Fari Islands

The debut resort from Capella Hotels & Resorts’ new elevated lifestyle brand, Patina has certainly stepped things up a notch in the Maldives.

Newly opened, this 110-villa property is part of Fari Islands, a new manmade archipelago in the North Malé Atoll, which when complete, will comprise a trio of hotel brands including Capella and the just-opened Ritz-Carlton, designed by Kerry Hill.

Patina itself is spread over a sprawling 42-hectares, its lush interiors fringed by talcum-white sands and beyond that, a clear turquoise lagoon. Alongside the resort, the island is also home to Fari Marina Village, a 20-berth marina and a social hub comprising a collection of the resort’s 12 restaurants from the Patagonian-inspired Brasa to a burger truck.

Designed by Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, the resort’s neutral palette is boosted by earthy hues, subtle textures and matt surfaces that includes timbers, linen, rattan, stone and natural fibres. There’s lots to do too, from dolphin-spotting at sunset aboard the resort’s Adastra superyacht to getting pampered in the photogenic spa, where a series of low-lying cubic treatment rooms can be found dotted among the lush landscape. We suggest spending some time on your spacious outdoor deck, reading a book in the swinging hammock, followed by a bath at sunset with an indulgent glass of champagne.

BOOK IT: One Bedroom Sunset Water Pool Villa from £1,860. patinahotels.com

One&Only Reethi Rah

One&Only Reethi Rah

North Malé Atoll

It might have opened two decades ago, but One&Only Reethi Rah is still setting the bar high in terms of luxury hotels in the Maldives. Perched on a lush 108-acre octopus-shaped island with over six-kilometres of secluded coastline, the resort is the ultimate in barefoot luxury with 12 pristine beaches, a sprawling spa, an exceptional water sports offering and a collection of excellent restaurants and bars.

The villas have been designed by Jean-Michel Gathy to feature soaring ceilings with exposed bamboo beams, indulgent bathrooms, which are the same size as the bedrooms, and details like a mini fridge (yes really) for your makeup.

Spend the day lolling on your private cabana at the Beach Club, before heading to Fanditha – the Arabian restaurant – or Tapasake to watch the sun go down. The latter is the resort’s overwater Japanese-Peruvian restaurant, where you can get your sushi and sashimi fix alongside other crowd-pleasers like the black cod with miso.

Not to mention the spa, which completes the experience as the ultimate honeymooner’s dream destination.

BOOK IT: Beach Villa from £1,345, including breakfast. oneandonlyresorts.com

Kudadoo Maldives Private Island

Kudadoo Maldives

Private Island, Lhaviyani Atoll

Imagine a place where everything and anything is available at any time, anywhere you want. Welcome to Kudadoo, an intimate 15-villa resort with an exclusive all-inclusive offering that covers everything from unlimited spa treatments to champagne on tap.

Set on a  postage stamp of an island in the Lhaviyani Atoll, the resort’s distinct Japanese aesthetic comes courtesy of New York-based Japanese architect Yuji Yamazaki. As such, the overwater villas channel tranquil ryokan vibes, their curved roofs and slatted timber exterior leading to an elegant interior with an open-plan living room and sleeping area, and an indoor-outdoor Japanese inspired bathroom.

When not lazing on your spacious outdoor deck – which comes complete with its own pool, sofa swing, outdoor dining area and easy access to the lagoon for some epic snorkelling sessions – head to The Retreat. Here, you’ll find the main swimming pool, restaurant (which has a wine cellar and cheese room), bar and spa, all housed within a space that has been smartly designed to maximise natural air flow, with a roof that incorporates 984 solar panels, enabling the entire resort to be purely powered by the sun.

Whether it’s a private yoga session, an in-villa massage, or a romantic breakfast on a secluded nearby sandbank, whatever you want is yours, at any time and anywhere. Pair this with the intuitive and discreet service of your personal butler, and you have a ground-breaking concept that will impress even the most discerning of travellers.

BOOK IT: One Bedroom Ocean Residence from £2,500, with everything included. kudadoo.com

Huvafen Fushi

Huvafen Fushi

North Malé Atoll

Huvafen Fushi might not be as flashy as some of its competitors, but what it lacks in excess is more than made up for with its charm, intimacy and amenities.

Its location is a short 30-minute speedboat ride from Malé, but it seems a world away, its compact size, lush foliage and quiet sandy lanes coming together to reveal a tranquil retreat with an informal, barefoot vibe.

There are just 44 private bungalows and pavilions, all of which have their own pools, however if you can tear yourself away, the main infinity pool is a great alternative, particularly at sunset, when you can meander to the adjoining bar for a cocktail.

Along with five bars and restaurants, including an underground wine cellar as well as Raw, which offers fresh, organic and wholesome dishes from its perch over the lagoon, there’s lots to do  from stargazing with champagne on the resort’s dhoni to coral adoption. But it’s the spa that is the biggest wow factor with its mesmerising underwater treatment room eight-metres below sea level.

BOOK IT: Beach Bungalow from £1000, including breakfast. huvafenfushi.com

Hurawalhi Island Resort

Hurawalhi Island Resort

Private Island, Lhaviyani Atoll

It’s no surprise the area of sea around Hurawalhi is called ‘The Aquarium’. Alongside an abundance of truly astonishing sea life, it is also a haven for dolphins – many of which can be seen frolicking at breakfast time just off the deck of Canelli restaurant – while there is a manta ray feeding and breeding ground 150m from the beach.

Aside from that, there’s plenty to do, from scuba diving and snorkelling to sunset cruises, spa treatments, or just lazing around on the spacious deck of your villa. But for something a little more elevated, head to 5.8, where you’ll dine on dishes like the ponzu salmon belly with aromatic glazed scallop while being entertained by a mesmerising display of undersea life.

As for being green, 30% of the island is powered by solar energy, there is also a water bottling plant, a food recycling programme, and extensive kitchen garden. Pair this with an array of restaurants and bars – including a romantic champagne pavilion for sunset bubbles – gently swaying palm trees, dazzling white sand and brilliantly clear turquoise waters, and you might just have the dream island escape.

BOOK IT: Ocean Villa from £428, including breakfast. hurawalhi.com

Amilla Maldives Resort & Residences 6 bedroom apartment

Amilla Maldives Resort & Residences

Finolhas Baa Atoll

Amilla Maldives Resort & Residences (previously Amilla Fushi) continues to be a true disruptor of the traditional Maldives experience thanks to its brilliant white minimalist cuboid villas along with a private marina, which feels much more Miami than Maldives. And then there’s the glitzy infinity pool, buzzy Emperor’s Beach Club and a spa and wellness village with offerings like Sensora light, sound and vibration therapy.

More recently, the resort has taken things a step further with a sustainability programme that goes far beyond banning plastic bottles to include The Nut – a dedicated coconut processing facility that will utilise waste to make everything from cold-pressed virgin coconut oil to coco peat for the gardens – and Cluckingham Palace- home to the happiest chickens in the Maldives.

If you can tear yourself away from your villa, there is a weekly activities schedule that includes all sorts from acrobatics classes to foot reflexology workshops. Complete this with a glamping experience in a luxury air conditioned bubble tent, which comes with champagne and a private chef, and it’s no wonder the resort is a favourite of the jet set.

BOOK IT: Double rooms from £790 a night, including breakfast. amilla.com

Anantara Kihavah Villas

Anantara Kihavah

Baa Atoll

Paradise might be an overused word when it comes to the Maldives, but Anantara Kihavah really is heaven on earth. Perched within the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the private island is ringed by the whitest of sands and beyond that, nothing but a crystal-clear turquoise lagoon that is a playground for a kaleidoscope of tropical fish. Its remote location means endless horizon views and the starriest of skies, which are best experienced from Sky Bar, which is where you can also find the Maldives’ only over water observatory.

The style of the resort is traditional, with lots of timber and thatched roofs that add to the barefoot luxury vibe, while the 80 beach and over water villas are signature Anantara with high-end finishes. Elsewhere, there are six bars and restaurants, with four of them located in a hub. This includes Sea, which features the world’s first underwater wine cellar and marine activity so mesmerising, you might forget to eat.

Diversions include everything from snorkelling around the house reef with a marine biologist, to sunset cruises or wine tasting. Between June and early October, make sure to head to nearby Hanifaru bay to snorkel with the manta rays.

BOOK IT: From £1202 for a one-bedroom Beach Pool Villa, half-board and taxes included. kihavah-maldives.anantara.com

Gili Lankanfushi

Gili Lankanfushi

North Malé Atoll

Gili Lankanfushi has won a swag of awards for best resort in the Maldives and Asia – and it’s not hard to see why. It’s postcard perfect – from the blindingly white sand beaches fringed by swaying palms, to the room-temperature green ocean, to the champagne, sashimi and feet-in-the-sand breakfasts, to some of the best snorkelling in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s even changed its clocks to ‘island-time’, so guests enjoy an extra hour of sunlight. When you arrive at the North Atoll by speedboat (20 minutes from Malé airport), you surrender your shoes as part of the No Shoes, No News policy. Your butler then takes you to your spacious over-water villa. Each guest gets use of a bike, but it’s tempting – initially at least – to not leave your luxuriously appointed new home.

Whole days can pass pleasurably as you loll on the villa’s hammocks, daybeds and in the upper deck area (where a bed can be made up to sleep under the stars). If you feel energetic, you can jump off your back deck to have a quick snorkel. Once you do venture out, activities include the sunset dolphin cruise, surf lessons and diving. But it’s tempting to just chill. The spa is divine. Drift off during your Ayurvedic massage while looking at bull sharks and manta rays as they swim past the glass spa floor.

BOOK IT: Doubles from approx. £1,157. gili-lankanfushi.com

Naladhu Private Island

Naladhu

Private Island, South Malé Atoll

Translated as ‘beautiful island’, Naladhu is the ultimate in ‘far from the madding crowd’ privacy, offering pin-drop silence where rest and relaxation are the order of the day. Located in the South Malé Atoll, a nifty half-hour speed boat ride from Malé airport, just 20 spacious and immaculate residences offer a getaway where you literally don’t have to clap your eyes on anybody else. Unless, that is, you want a private chef to cook you up a wicked feast, or an in-house spa therapist with healing hands to administer massages beside your own swimming pool. In fact, it would be a sin not to submit to Naladhu’s famous in-room ‘spa journey’ – choosing between Ayurvedic, Thai, Balinese or Western programmes.

Once you’ve got over your jet lag and your body’s feeling soft and supple, head out for activities such as kayaking, snorkelling and swimming with sharks, should the mood take you. Come here for nothing more than the sand under your toes, the salty sea water against your skin, the sun on your face and every conceivable anxiety taken care of. Sounds like the perfect holiday. And you can always book out the entire island should you either be planning the reunion of the century or really can’t stand the thought of anybody else being around.

BOOK IT: From £954 B&B for an ocean house with a pool. anantara.com

JW Marriott Maldives

JW Marriott Maldives

Van’gaaru Island

Straw hats off to JW Marriott. With its ultra-private supersize villas, sensational food and abundance of water sports, the brand has raised the bar yet again with its spanking new resort in the Maldives. Set on the remote island of Vagary in the northern atoll of Shaviyani, this beach retreat has 60 thatched villas, each with a private pool and thakuru (butler). Pops of cream, blue and natural materials echo the surroundings with massive expanses of glass to draw the outside in. When beachside lounging gets too much, get stuck into the preposterously long list of water activities on offer – the snorkelling turtle quest is a must.

Back on dry land, drop your little ones off at the fantastic kids’ club before heading to the sublime overwater spa (book the deeply healing stress relief massage). The five restaurants in the resort stretch from Italian to Thai – don’t miss the Japanese teppanyaki at Hashi, run by former Nobu chef Namuraj Tamang. Grab a cocktail beforehand in Rum Baan, nestled in the treetops, which has a staggering 98 signature rums to sample. Or, for the all-out local experience, go for a traditional Malaafaiy dinner on the beach. You won’t regret it.

BOOK IT: From approx. £681 B&B for a pool villa. marriott.co.uk

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

South Malé Atoll

This highly anticipated new opening takes barefoot luxury to the next level from the moment you land. While others wait to pile onto tiny seaplane transfers, an air-conditioned Princess yacht with sun deck (and four bedrooms) whisks new arrivals, champagne in hand, on a blissful 40-minute cruise to the resort. Forget any corporate connotations – this Waldorf Astoria maximises on marrying innovative and imaginative concepts (think photogenic tree-top bamboo dining nests at the superb Terra restaurant and glass-bottomed spa treatment rooms for mid- massage shark spotting) with sophistication and relaxed comfort.

Spread across three private islands joined by bridges, it’s one of the Maldives’ larger hotels – though with comparatively fewer villas, there’s a total sense of privacy. Villas are vast. Some overwater, others on the beach, and reef villas: a bit of both. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto a spacious deckwith a private infinity pool big enough to really swim in. With snorkels delivered to your door, and a house reef teeming with a technicolour array of sea life just a short swim away, one could easily never leave their villa. Make sure you do, though, as with 11 restaurants, a sublime spa and an abundance of water sports and excursions on offer, there’s so much to see and savour in this truly exceptional spot.

BOOK IT: Reef villa with pool from £1,480 B&B. waldorfastoriamaldives.com

Intercontinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort

Raa Atoll

Here’s the thing – it’s not hard to find silky soft sand and azure waters in the Maldives. What truly sets this resort apart is the way it makes you feel. From the moment you step onto the arrival jetty and are welcomed like a long-lost friend with a cool drink and warm hug, you get a sense of home. The meticulous attention to detail extends beyond each room’s bricolage interiors, and is infused in every interaction you have with staff. A dedicated island curator will be on hand to make your stay seamless, organising snorkelling trips, stargazing, beach picnics, outdoor movie nights, spa treatments, and even unpacking and repacking your suitcase. It’s also the first InterContinental resort to offer Club InterContinental benefits to all guests, including complimentary afternoon tea and aperitif cocktails.

Enclaved within the Maldives’ largest lagoon, you needn’t venture too far to swim among rays, sharks, turtles and schools of fish. There are six dining spots but Fish Market, with its open kitchen and indoor/outdoor seating truly stands out with a bold menu that’s bursting with aromatic, south-east Asian flavour. The overwater spa is heavenly but for a truly transformative treatment, book in with the Chinese medicine doctor whose methods include acupuncture, cupping, remedial tui-na, herbal medicine and other ancient techniques to restore internal balance.

BOOK IT: From approx. £791 for a beach pool villa. maldives.intercontinental.com

The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah

The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah

Dhigurah

Just 13 miles north of the equator, this resort is remote even by Maldivian standards. Too far from capital Malé to travel by seaplane, it can only be reached on a 55-minute domestic flight and final speedboat ride to secluded Gaafu Alifu, one of the world’s largest and deepest atolls. The island itself is thick with jungle, sandy pathways weaving through banana and coconut trees for a real back-to-nature feel. There are 173 villas, from beachfront to overwater with either sunrise or sunset views, but none will disappoint. All are spacious but simply designed, with thatched roofs, neutral colours and teak and rattan interiors, and all come with private pools, bicycles and Insta-perfect views of the glowing, aquamarine sea and endless horizon beyond.

There are water-sports galore, dolphin-watching cruises, a kids’ club, glorious 42-metre infinity pool, Clarins spa and the resort’s own deserted island for an unmissable picnic lunch. Otherwise, feast on international flavours at the Dining Room, classic Cantonese fare at Li Bai and the Mediterranean menu at poolside Café del Sol, or cycle the stunning one-kilometre bridge to Falhumaafushi to sample the excellent restaurants at the resort’s neighbouring sister property. A double delight.

Varu

VARU by Atmosphere

North Malé Atoll

A relative newcomer, Varu opened in late 2019. Located on the north-west edge of the Malé Atoll, it’s just a 40-minute speedboat ride from Malé airport. On arrival, a golf buggy whisks guests to one of 108 beach-front or overwater villas, each with inviting décor featuring both luxurious and natural elements, with additions such as open-air bathrooms and private pools. Regardless of accommodation, every guest is on an all-inclusive plan that covers non-motorized water sports, a range of excursions (including stargazing and fishing), all meals and an impressive array of drinks (for example – the minibar is, dangerously, replenished twice daily).

Dining options include a contemporary buffet and traditional Maldivian restaurant, complete with educational video on arrival. Unwind in the Elena spa, where face-down time is enhanced by views through the floor’s window onto the water, or lounge by the infinity pool for dreamy sunset views. Recreational options range from a games room (great for those scorching midday hours) to an Astro football pitch, to the free use of snorkelling equipment – perfect for reef exploration that can be accessed, blissfully, from your very own living space.

BOOK IT: Seven nights from £2,799pp, including transfers. varu-atmosphere.com

Emerald-Maldives-Resort-SPA-1

Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa

Fasmendhoo Island

Mastering the tricky all-inclusive concept is the Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa, found in the northwestern part of the Maldives archipelago. Villas are available to book for a lower rate than many of the resort’s all-inclusive competitors, though this certainly doesn’t come at the price of design, facilities or service, all of which are impeccable. Once you’re on the island, there’s no need to worry about additional costs – bar a few extras, such as jet skiing – adding a new level of relaxation.

With 20 hectares of land to play with, Emerald has more space than many Maldivian resorts too, allowing privacy across the 120 villas, which are split between the beach and the water. Food is a highlight, with four restaurants to explore including Amazònico, the first South American restaurant in the Maldives: a rainforest-style, lantern-bedecked space with an open fire grill. ‘Natural elegance’ is the hotel’s tagline: bamboo, langhi langhi leaves and stones create a tropical-chic vibe in which the architecture exists in harmony with the natural landscape. Italian influences can also be seen in aspects of the design – the Venetian-inspired bathrooms are worthy of a special mention, featuring white marble, freestanding baths and floor-to-ceiling windows boasting some of the best views in the whole of the Maldives. And the bar is set high.

BOOK IT: From £550 all-inclusive for a deluxe beach villa. emerald-maldives.com

Conrad Maldives

Conrad Maldives

Rangali Island

Lauded for its kaleidoscopic blue waters, pristine shores and exquisite villas peppered across two verdant islands, the Conrad may be a beloved classic and author of the Maldives signature wooden stilt villas, but it is far from complacent. The hotel’s relentless quest for a spicy edge over its counterparts reached its climax this year with the launch of THE MURAKA, a once-in-a-lifetime butlered residence and affront to tired ideals on luxury, submerged five meters under the Indian Ocean with Bond villain panache. Guests are privy to a near-psychedelic flush of marine life from their sumptuous bed, shower, walk-in-wardrobe, even loo. As a barefoot luxury veteran, the resort’s spas, restaurants and villas are sewn delicately into the lush, celestial landscape: the infinity pools play on the sea’s vibrant hues, the Over Water Spa embodies the treasured edge of the Maldives cliché and even the tennis court is wrapped in exotic bloom.

BOOK IT: Prices start from £589 for a Deluxe Beach Villa for two on a bed and breakfast basis and are POA for THE MURAKA, with a butler and extra exclusive experiences available. conradmaldives.com

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru

Four Seasons Resort Maldives

Landaa Giraavaru, Baa Atoll

The skies are so vast and sparkling in the Maldives the idea of sleeping under an ordinary flat ceiling is unthinkable. Instead, the double-height vaulted bedrooms in the Four Seasons at Landaa Giraavaru create an expansive sense of freedom and overlook private pools long enough for a proper swim. Luscious hibiscus and glossy cheese plants surround the thatched outdoor living room, and beyond a bosky thicket of exotic plants the sea washes onto spotless white sand.

There are 102 villas here, but in the evening when the restaurants fill with people, you rather wonder where these fellow guests have been all day – indulging in room service or upside down, doing weightless yoga? Under the bright blue sky, hammocks hang loose between palm trees and the four swimming pools are exclusively yours for the day – one is the only Olympic-sized facility in the Maldives. The spa is brilliant, with an Ayurvedic massage that takes clients on a transcendental journey for 90 minutes. Don’t miss the Marine Discovery Centre, where injured turtles and fish come to recuperate with the in-house marine biologists. A heavenly idyll.

BOOK IT: From £6,569 for three nights B&B from 21 September, followed by three nights on the Four Seasons Explorer catamaran taking part in the Manta Trust diving expeditions. Includes flights and transfers. elegantresorts.com

Joali Maldives

JOALI Maldives

Muravandhoo Island, Raa Atoll

The Maldives is formed of 20 mesmerising natural atolls which have, over the years, become home to more envy-inducing resorts than an Instagram star could shake a selfie stick at. Muravandhoo Island is home to a 73-strong pack of villas, split across the beachfront and wooden jetty, each with private steps down to the crystal clear water’s edge. Soneva Jani

Soneva Jani

Medhufaru Island, Manadhoo

The latest outpost from Sonu and Eva Shivdasani, the couple who brought us one of the best and longest-standing hotels in the Maldives, Soneva Fushi. When Soneva Fushi first opened in 1995 there were few hotels to rival it. While it is still going strong, Soneva Jani is its younger, rather snazzier sibling. All rooms are in bells and whistles water villas: a kitchenette, a rooftop dining area, a private pool, a sitting room, a bed with a retractable roof so you can sleep under the stars. Most villas come with their own waterslide into the sea, and if they don’t you can pay to add one. Meantime the incredible Peruvian restaurant serves zing-fresh ceviche and offers an overwater cinema where you can loll with popcorn after your meal and watch a movie outside. Everything is designed to nudge you into enjoying yourself; it would be absurdly hard not to succumb.

When Is The Best Time Of The Year To Visit The Maldives?

Generally, the Maldives is regarded as an all-year-round holiday destination, and famously there is a local saying, ‘it’s always summer in the Maldives.’ It’s consistently hot and often humid due to its tropical climate; there are, however, two very distinct seasons, and this will impact your holiday timings.

For those who want to go in full, picture-perfect season, the best time of the year to visit the Maldives is during the Northeast Monsoon, also known as the dry season which extends from December to April. At this time, average rainfall amounts are at their lowest, and the hours of sunshine is up – visitors are greeted by the infamous sun, sand and sea, along with a range of unique experiences.

Southwest Monsoon, also known as the wet season, runs from mid-May to November and this comes about due to the change in wind direction, which brings the rain and is felt more in the north. As a result, there may be slightly more hotel availability, at slightly cheaper prices. In reality, though, there are very few days of rain, and even if it does pour, it often clears quickly – but this is still a little risky.

What is the Maldives like in each season?

Spring

If you’re looking to visit the Maldives in spring, expect the hottest temperatures from March to May, with the most amount of sunshine during this period, especially in March. This is set against rain showers, which tend to ramp up in April through to mid-May. Then, stormy weather may hit.

Summer

From June to August is the Maldives’ wet season, but there’s still high temperatures and humidity and, as such, the weather is temperamental, with sun and intermittent rainfall that varies from light to complete downpours with strong winds. The rain at this time can last between hours to a continuous drizzle throughout the day.

Autumn

Though autumn is regarded as the wettest season in the Maldives, there are still sunny periods with hot temperatures, too. From October to November, the winds change again, and it starts to become drier and sunnier.

Winter

The weather is a little changeable, still with a few showers (due to the North East winds changing), but from December, the Maldives is predominantly hot and dry. As such, it kicks off peak season – so book ahead so you don’t miss the best time of the year to visit the Maldives.

The Maldives has many insta-worthy, high-end resorts on cerulean-ringed tropical islands, all offering pampering escapism. But what makes JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa stand out is its ability to attract both families and couples while never feeling crowded. Stretched along a talcum-fine crescent of sand by a wide lagoon, the resort’s beach and overwater villas are spaciously dispersed and offer beautiful seclusion if so desired.

Hotel Review: JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa

STAY

JW Marriott is situated on the secluded Vagaru Island, and features 60 sleek beach and overwater villas with thatched roofs shaped like the prow of a dhoni (a local fishing boat) along with sea and sand inspired interiors: lampstands with twining wooden bases, bold shell-shaped lampshades and ocean-inspired art. The floor-to-ceiling windows give stunning views and from the super comfy king size bed; from here, watch for passing dhoni floating across the ocean.

Besides the well-stocked mini-bar, there is complimentary tea and coffee, a bathroom the size of a double bedroom, and toiletries from Aromatherapy Associates. The large terrace has sunbeds and a vast plunge pool where we enjoyed an outrageously indulgent floating champagne breakfast while soaking up (literally) horizon-wide vistas. From the overwater villas you can step down the short metal ladder into the bath-like lagoon – the standout feature. From here, it is an easy snorkel to the breakwater where an aquatic wonderland awaits. Within moments, we spotted fluorescent blue Parrot fish,  black and white striped Oriental Sweetlips (rather like giant mint humbugs), and darting Nemo-lookalikes, the Clown fish – the perfect introduction to our stay.

Beach Pool Villa Sunset Bedroom

The beach villas (which families tend to prefer) have private terraces with direct access to dazzling white sand and the calm lagoon. The homes are tucked along pleasant sandy lanes shaded by tamed jungle. You will also find the well-equipped Little Griffins kids club (with a climbing pirate ship Captain Hook would envy), a boutique and the lush garden. The herbs, fruit and vegetables are used in welcome drinks, scents and, of course, in the restaurant kitchens.

DO

For a small tropical island, in true Maldives style, there is plenty to keep you occupied. The dive centre offers scuba diving, jet skiing, dolphin-watching and snorkelling trips to the nearby reef, where you can spot turtles and swim so close to eagle-rays you could almost touch their sail-like wings – an unforgettable experience.

Non-motorised water sports, such as rowing in the transparent kayak, are complimentary, as are the yoga classes. There are two swimming pools: one family-friendly pool, and one for adults only. Besides six treatment rooms, the spa is home to a deluxe double room for couples; zone out with a massage, then flop into your own plunge pool, all while enjoying the watery vista (it is very popular, so book well in advance!).

SPA by JW Deluxe Treatment Suite

Each guest has a helpful Thakuru (a butler), who will answer any queries and golf-buggy you around. In-between ferrying us to dinner, our wonderful Thakuru, Gasim, was always pointing out rare sightings such as a tuna or ray in the lagoon or the magical bioluminescent plankton washing up along the twinkling nighttime shore, or telling us about life on the island. The resort started a coral restoration project last year, so the coral is regularly checked, too.

If you want to get a little under the skin, try a cookery class with local chef Aminath Abdul Rasheed. Aminath crushed spices, mixed up coconut rice, seared tuna and showed us how to make a mouth-watering Maldivian fish curry. Two of the restaurant kitchens are, unusually for the Maldives, led by female chefs.

EAT

JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa’s three bars and five restaurants are all excellent and atmospheric. Breakfast at the all-day Aailaa (meaning ‘family’) restaurant is overwater and, from the shaded terrace, you can watch fish darting around as you tuck into your croissant or curry, cereal or sushi, or whatever else takes your fancy from the delicious global smorgasbord on offer.

Lunch can be at the Italian Fiamma restaurant, by the family pool or at the treetop Thai restaurant, Kaashi (meaning ‘coconut’). After crossing the Indiana Jones-style rope bridge to the latter, sit at a table in the trees, overlooking the ocean, and tuck into delicious satay and Thai salad. In the distance, you might spy shiny black fins breaking the waves as a pod of dolphins swim past.

The bridge to Kaashi & Rum Baan

Kaashi & Rum Baan (courtesy of Marriott International Hotel)

Our evening meals were a toss-up between Hashi’s teppanyaki grill or the overwater Shio  with its prime cut meats and crustaceans, which included everything from Wagyu beef to lobster. If money is no object, reserve a table in the cool wine room – with its 1,620 bottles – and have your favourite meal paired with vintage wines.

After, collapse in one of the funky swinging rope seats at the Horizon bar and, as there is no light pollution here, enjoy a rum cocktail while spotting constellations in the starry sky.

THE FINAL WORD

With its friendly and attentive staff, elegant villas and excellent facilities, JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa more than delivers – and for all ages, too. Best of all, however, is the serene, unspoilt beauty of the island, which the resort highlights gloriously.

BOOK IT

Overwater sunrise villas start from USD $650 per night bed and breakfast, or $950 per night all inclusive. marriott.com

Looking for a slice of winter sun with a sustainable edge? At the forefront of the sustainable hotels movement, the Maldives should be your go-to destination. When visiting, consider how you can make a positive impact – financially or physically – rather than leaving the negative results of your visit in your wake. If you’re in need of ideas, we’re here to help. Here is the C&TH guide to sustainable hotels in the Maldives, including what to look out for, what you can do to help, and our pick of the best eco resorts.

The C&TH Guide to Sustainable Hotels in the Maldives

Long haul sustainable travel is a contradiction that’s tricky to overlook. Over in the Maldives, the Indian Ocean archipelago that defines dreamy island getaways, sustainability is critical: rising sea levels as result of global warming mean that this low-lying country could disappear in a matter of years.

The easy option is to simply stop travelling to the islands – perhaps to stop travelling altogether. But to abandon nations that are so reliant on tourism – in the Maldives, tourism accounts for 28 of GDP and 90 per cent of government tax revenue – is just as ill-informed. Though overtourism is an urgent problem, the Maldives relies on this industry for its economic survival. Thus, increasing sustainability initiatives and ecotourism are a lifelines for the ecological survival of the archipelago.

What To Look Out For When Picking a Resort

  • Check for sustainability credentials, and try to find the resort’s sustainability plan – if there isn’t one, that’s clue enough
  • Research how the resort was constructed: have they been sustainable from the start, or are they greenwashing now that they have opened?
  • Check the resort’s attitude to plastic. On some islands, single-use plastic is completely banned
  • Research the resort’s contributions to the local economy, local businesses, and any local charities
  • Are there any environmental initiatives at the resort that guests can get involved with during their stay?

What You Can Do To Help

  • Use environmentally friendly products, like reef-safe sunscreen
  • Leave plastic packaging at home, or take it home with you when you leave
  • Eat meat – including some seafood like oysters and fish like Atlantic salmon – in moderation (or avoid it completely), as it has to be flown in or shipped to the Maldives

Sustainable Hotels In The Maldives

Photo 1 of
Six Senses Laamu

Six Senses Laamu

Best For: Switching Off

Six Senses Laamu was voted best hotel in Asia in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2022. This accolade alone may be enough to ensure that this secluded and somnolent island retreat in the relatively remote Laamu Atoll is top of many people’s bucket lists. Like a moth to the flame, newlyweds are drawn to the Maldives, but if you are past the first flush of post-nuptial bliss and have children in tow, Laamu is also a sure bet. Better still, it’s one of the most sustainable resorts in the Maldives.

As with all Six Senses, the Laamu resort is not show-offy but nonetheless luxury seeps through its every pore. On arrival, you’re asked to remove your shoes and you won’t put them back on until you leave – Six Senses is all about reconnecting with nature. There are 97 heavenly villas, each of which was built with an environmental ethos and respect for local culture in both construction and design; the majority are overwater with a handful scattered on the beach.

The food at Laamu is mouth-wateringly delicious no matter where you choose to eat, but Leaf, perched on stilts above the organic garden, deserves an honorary mention as does the cinema under the stars where younger guests are fed, watered and entertained every night while adults enjoy dinner in peace. At The Den, children are treated to a host of absorbing activities from setting sail on a treasure island cruise complete with water cannons and marauding pirate ships, to joining the Junior Marine Biology Programme. Young, old, exhausted with young children – the island is intoxicating for everyone.

LANKANFUSHI Maldives

Gili Lankanfushi

Best For: Balance

A speedy 007-style speed boat ride from the airport ensures that you reach paradisiacal ‘no shoes, no news’ Gili Lankanfushi as quickly as it takes for you to shake out your crumpled clothes from the flight. In just 20 minutes, you’ll be greeted at what is widely regarded as one of the best resorts in the Maldives by the Gili staff and introduced to your personal Mr or Ms Friday who will cater to your every whim throughout your stay (even teaching your five-year-old to drive a golf buggy).

There are just 45 palm-thatched villas made from sustainably sourced teak, pine and oak, the biggest of which is the vast Private Reserve accessible only by boat. All are plastic free and replete with stonking stereos, endless seating areas for lolling around in and bicycles for leisurely rides through the jungly island.

For those who like to burn more calories than it takes to raise a margarita glass, you’ll find some of the best surf in the region. And don’t miss snorkelling the reef with the resident marine biologist. An early morning tennis lesson with the island’s pro is a great way to justify a day spent in a hammock slung between swaying palms or working off the cheese and wine experience in the underground cellar (there are over 500 wines and champagnes down there), complete with an extraordinary table hewn from a huge piece of driftwood deposited on the island by the 2004 tsunami. Basically, you’ll never want news or shoes again. Bliss.

Soneva Fushi

Soneva Fushi

Best For: Luxe Sustainability

When Sonu and Eva Shivdasani opened this, their first Soneva resort nearly 30 years ago, it was a game-changer. Not only because of its barefoot luxury concept but also the ‘slow life’ philosophy which has always had sustainability at its core. Soneva Fushi has always been one of the most sustainable resorts in the Maldives, but more recent initiatives include the Eco Centro with everything from mushroom-growing huts to a station where coconut shells are turned into charcoal for the restaurants. There’s also a Soneva Foundation programme to create a one-hectare coral nursery – the largest in the Indian Ocean. The island is all jungle living, with thatched ocean-facing villas that each have their own pool. Cycle along sandy paths to the dive centre, The Den (the kid’s club with a pirate ship and rooms dedicated to Lego, music and dressing-up) or to the Glass Studio for a glass blowing session. Supper experiences include ziplining through the trees to Flying Sauces and Fresh in the Garden, a year-long residency by Danish chef Mads Refslund (who co-founded Noma) based around fire and ice. A gorgeous getaway that is continually evolving in ever-more creative ways.

BOOK IT: Seven nights half-board from £7,979, including seaplane transfers and international flights, until 17 Dec 22. turquoiseholidays.co.uk

a scuba diver propagating coral

Fairmont Maldives

Best For: Hands-On Sustainability

Fun-filled and educational, the newly launched Sustainability Lab at Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi allows families to create special keepsakes – from cute turtle keychains to functional stationery ready for back-to-school – from ocean salvaged waste. For budding animal lovers, there’s also the Turtle Ranger programme, in which young guests join the resident Marine Biologist to monitor critically endangered Hawksbill Turtles, release hatchlings into the ocean, and plant new coral. fairmont.com

OBLU SELECT LOBIGILI maldives

Oblu Select Lobigili

Best For: Romance

Opening earlier this year, Oblu Select Lobigili is a new adults-only resort situated in the Maldives’ North Malé Atoll. Offering a castaway experience that is within easy reach, you can feel the sand between your toes within 15 minutes of the airport. Don’t let this proximity to the airport dishearten you, as the island offers guests plenty of luxuries, including fantastic food and fine beaches.

Romance rules here – ‘loabi’ means love and ‘gili’ means island in the Maldivian language of Dhivehi. There’s even a mini heart-shaped island moments from the shoreline for intimate wedding ceremonies and private dining.

For a relaxed and stress-free Maldivian experience, the ‘Lobi Plan’ offers more than your typical all-inclusive, from sunset fishing and spa treatments to an unlimited minibar. A bright, cheerful aesthetic can be seen throughout the romantic island with bubble-gum pink buggies, fuchsia sun loungers and candy pink and white beach towels. The resort has one of the largest underwater restaurants, an open-air spa and a choice of beach and water villas for a tropical getaway.

Anantara Dhigu Maldives

Anantara Dhigu

Best For: Watersports

When it comes to warm welcomes, Anantara Dhigu knows how to put on a fanfare. Greeted by a host of clapping staff, drums and ice-cold coconut drinks, it’s an accurate indication of what to expect from your stay. A more lively alternative to its Niyama sister hotel but also sharing a lagoon with two other Anantara properties – Veli and Naladhu (so there’s other restaurants, bars and activities to discover) – the resort is a lesson in family fun combined with some much-needed relaxation.

Just 30 minutes by speedboat from Malé, nestled in a shallow turquoise lagoon, the island is a playground for activities such as paddleboarding, surfing or joining an excursion to swim with nurse sharks for the afternoon. But if you need to recoup from a busy day at the water sports centre, there are 110 beach villas and over-water suites to retire to, plus a lovely spa with excellent coconut-based treatments. Whether it’s reclining with a good book on the swinging sofa on the terrace beside your pool or watching the sun set from your private sun lounger on the beach, there are plenty of cosy nooks to enjoy (the photogenic lagoon hammock is a must if you can wait your turn).

BOOK IT: Doubles from £450 half-board excluding taxes. anantara.com

Soneva Jani So Primative alfresco dining table outside in evening on beach

Soneva Jani

Best For: Wellness

The second Soneva outpost in the Maldives, this island is underpinned by the same sustainably driven values as the original (Fushi) yet cleverly has its own character, too. The majority of villas are overwater. Those on the Chapter Two side were added in 2020; they are dreamy, each with a huge deck, pool and a slide that whooshes you straight out into the crystal-clear ocean. The big news is this year’s launch of Soneva Soul, an all-encompassing wellness concept which combines ancient healing philosophies (for instance, Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine) with innovative treatments such as nutrient IV therapy and cryotherapy, and honed-in programmes that range from meditation to yoga and sleep (rolled out at Soneva Fushi, too).

Restaurants include toes-in-the-sand Crab Shack for a seafood lunch and Overseas by Mathias Dahlgren (known for his two Michelin-guide Stockholm restaurants Matbaren and Rutabaga) where dishes include deep-fried tofu and broccoli, and tuna served on shiso leaf with soy. Spend days dolphin spotting and snorkelling, or come here to simply fly-and-flop in complete privacy.

BOOK IT: Seven nights half-board from £8,799, inc. seaplane and int. flights, until 17 Dec 22. turquoiseholidays.co.uk

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands

Best For: Smart Design

With solar panels, a dedicated plant for still and sparkling water, and having been built with sustainably sourced timber, the Ritz-Carlton Maldives has been eco-conscious since conception. Home to the Jean-Michel Cousteau Ambassadors of the Environment Program – collaborating with the world-renowned oceanographic explorer, environmentalist and film producer – the resort offers guests the chance to explore the ocean depths, or even join leading scientists and marine technologists on bi-weekly drone flights – a Maldives’ first – to observe the precious sea-life of the surrounding ocean. Inspired by the ancient Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang energies, the spa offers everything you could want, but with a sustainable edge and Bamford’s holistic treatments and products.

BOOK IT: ritzcarlton.com

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

Best For: Lie Ins

When you arrive at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, you step into an Instagram picture of unparalleled views and an abundance of flora and fauna. The first international hotel to open in the Maldives, it has just completed a major transformation of the tiny adults-only Rangali Island. All 50 of the thatched-roof overwater villas have been redesigned for indoor-outdoor living with direct access to a private sun deck, complete with pool and staircase leading to the turquoise waters below.

There’s also a brand-new gym, and the Over Water Spa has had a stylish makeover. Taking personalised service to the next level is The Muraka, billed as the world’s first undersea residence and boasting a master bedroom that doubles as an aquarium – watch reef sharks glide past while you brush your teeth. Another thrilling first is undersea restaurant Ithaa, offering panoramic views of the surrounding coral garden and a fusion menu featuring local seafood.

With a total of 12 restaurants, prepare to feast your way around the resort. There’s no shortage of activities either, including snorkelling safaris, diving, windsurfing, catamaran sailing and dolphin cruises.

BOOK IT: Beach villa from £405 per night. conradmaldives.com

niyama maldives crescent

Niyama Private Islands

Best For: Kids

It’s not hard to see why Niyama has so many returning guests. Spanning over two kilometres, the island is an oasis of tropical woodlands and secret lagoons. Separated into two adjoining islands aptly named Chill and Play, the resort is well equipped for both families and couples with spacious water villas (complete with popcorn makers and very Instagrammable decor), one of the largest kids’ clubs in the Maldives and hammock-lined remote beaches for some ‘me-time’.

Although Niyama provides every guest with a personalised bike to explore the island (and work off the sizeable buffet breakfasts), your personal butler can also ferry you from A to B in a buggy if you’d prefer a star-lit ride after dinner. For a more exclusive al fresco experience, try Asian street food on the beach at Niyama’s Took Took, or Rum, Ribs and Reggae at the resort’s Surf Shack for a fun alternative to your nightly meal. Rainy days (and there certainly are some) call for Active, the resorts cosy hideaway kitted out with board games, painting classes and must-see movie nights.

BOOK IT: Seven nights for £4,199pp for a Beach Villa on a half-board basis including seaplane and flights. Until 22 Dec 23. turquoiseholidays.co.uk

Joali Being maldives beach house

Joala Being

Best For: A Health Kick

‘The Maldives? On your own?’ Until recently a solo trip to couples’ heaven was the preserve of those who’d been jilted but refused to let a good honeymoon go to waste. Activities included angrily emptying the minibar while shouting at the sea. But times have changed and there’s a new kid on the block, here to meet self-serving needs of a new health-conscious breed.

Joali Being, the brand’s second property, claims to be a trailblazer: ‘The first dedicated wellness retreat in the Maldives.’ A world-class squad of naturopaths, therapists and nutritionists have been gathered to deliver wellbeing experiences, scientific therapies and diagnostic services in a whopping 39 treatment rooms. And it’s a joy to look at: temple-like ‘biophilic’ architecture is given a pastel palette – teal, pink, sand white – and decked with natural-fibres and miles of blonde-wood rattan. One of a combination of Joali Being’s ‘Four Pillars’ – mind, skin, microbiome and energy – are chosen for you during a consultant assessment, which then dictates everything you do and consume for the duration of your stay. The end result? ‘Weightlessness’. Much better than a husband.

Guests are treated to complimentary ice cream from the Tuk Tuk Gelato as well as bikes, a snorkelling set, stand-up paddle board and kayaks for the more adventurous.

Best For: Disrupting The Norm

Amilla Maldives Resort & Residences (previously Amilla Fushi) continues to be a true disruptor of the traditional Maldives experience thanks to its brilliant white minimalist cuboid villas along with a private marina, which feels much more Miami than Maldives. And then there’s the glitzy infinity pool, buzzy Emperor’s Beach Club and a spa and wellness village with offerings like Sensora light, sound and vibration therapy.

More recently, the resort has taken things a step further with a sustainability programme that goes far beyond banning plastic bottles to include The Nut – a dedicated coconut processing facility that utilises waste to make everything from cold-pressed virgin coconut oil to coco peat for the gardens. There’s also Cluckingham Palace, home to the happiest chickens in the Maldives.

Located in the UNESCO world biosphere reserve, Milaidhoo participates in the Green Globe certification process, which sets strict standards on environmental actions as well as ethical business behaviour, fair trade and compliance with international best practices and standards. While they encourage guests to undertake sustainable practices – like wearing reef safe sunscreen, leaving shells on the beach rather than taking them as souvenirs, and taking plastic bottles home to be recycled – Milaidhoo does a lot of the heavy lifting.

It has: a state-of-the-art water and STP plant to ensure no contaminants enter the ocean and to re-use grey water; eco-friendly laundry detergents; a coral reef regeneration programme; partnerships with local charities; and a comprehensive sustainability plan. Carefree relaxation indeed.

For a safari experience and idyllic accommodation retreat that’s packed full of purpose, look to Matetsi Victoria Falls. Positively impacting Zimbabwe’s community welfare and environment, this hotel is partnered with Pack for a Purpose – a non-profit organisation helping travellers to positively impact the destinations they plan to visit with community welfare and conservation projects, and by allowing space in their luggage for much needed supplies. In Zimbabwe, this stretches from solar lantern lights to toothpaste and vitamins to first aid kits. As such, the scheme benefits various groups of people, from Greenline Africa Trust (which provides ‘Gogo Packs’ to support grandmothers looking after orphaned children in rural communities) to Mummy’s Angels Zimbabwe (which helps mothers and babies in need) to Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit.

The resort has also partnered with seven schools in the Shaviyani Atoll for the Fairmont Award Scheme, whereby the sustainability team visit the schools to teach classes and host workshops on recycling, marine biodiversity, and ocean conservation. Local children are also invited to visit the resort to witness the Sustainability Lab in action and learn about the conservation projects.

There’s also th Banjar Walk to take in the local culture and meet people within the local community, as well as the Pura Luhur Uluwatu and Kecak Dance experience which sees guests explore the nearby coastal water temple at sunset to watch local performers showcase a traditional Kecak dance.

Potato Head

Bali

A hotel that has sustainability and social responsibility at its core, Potato Head has a range of initiatives that support the local people and place. Like the Sweet Potato Farm, for example: an employee-led initiative whereby staff grow their own food on the hotel’s land to support their families and the local community. The hotel then delivers this produce to people, organisations, orphanages and hospitals that are in need. On site, there’s also the ‘5,000 Lost Soles’ installation by art-activist Liina Klauss which highlights the reality of marine pollution with flip-flops collected along the shores of Bali by Klauss and her small team in six beach clean-ups.

The hotel also supports the Green School’s Changemaker program, which sponsors young Balinese students to attend the innovative Green School for the entire period of their primary and secondary education. The resort is an ardent advocate of zero waste, as seen at almost every touchpoint, from refillable amenities (made locally), merchandise deriving from eucalyptus trees (the fibre is fully biodegradable and uses 80 percent less water than cotton), conscious cocktails using bi-products, and food produce from the Bali Fresh Farm Cooperative with line-caught fish from Bali Sustainable Seafood and rice from the UNESCO-protected Jatiluwih terraces.
