Hotel of the Week: Win A Stay At Artist Residence

Enter our Hotel of the Week competition for your chance to win a one-night stay for two people in one of the Artist Residence suites in Brighton, Oxfordshire, Bristol or Penzance – including welcome drinks & breakfast. Read on to find out about these gorgeous hotels…

Artist Residence Brighton

Bedroom at Artist Residence Brighton

The story of the Artist Residence group began 14 years ago when Justin and Charlotte Salisbury first met as students. Justin’s mum, who’d just bought a Brighton guesthouse in need of renovation, was seriously injured in an accident and 20-year-old Justin stepped in. Having no
idea how to tackle the redecoration, he filled the listed townhouse with artists, asking them to decorate the rooms in return for free board. And so, the first Artist Residence, successful and buzzy, was born in Brighton. It was soon joined by four more. The Brighton original has sea views and retro-style bedrooms ranging from tiny crash pads to a huge suite. The newest editions include three fabulous apartments one sleeping four guests, one with a balcony and all with high ceilings, original features and sea views. Each individually decorated room also features vintage furniture, organic Bramley bath and body products, limited edition art prints and Nespresso coffee machines. There’s also a relaxed neighbourhood hangout serving breakfast and cocktails.

Artist Residence South Leigh, Oxfordshire

Artist Residence Oxford

When it opened in 2017 this was a new departure for the burgeoning Artist Residence group of funky, art-themed hotels that have sprung up courtesy of Justin and Charlotte. The energetic couple, complete with a new baby, headed out of town to leafy Oxfordshire and took on the Mason Arms, a well-loved local inn in South Leigh, stamping it with their inimitable sense of style. There are now five stunning bedrooms upstairs and a further three suites in the stables and outbuildings, plus a cool shepherd’s hut in the garden. Original features have been retained and restored, auction houses and reclamation yards scoured and modern art set against William Morris wallpaper. The restaurant features art by the Connor Brothers, Ben Eine and Lucy Sparrow, while the kitchen produces hearty and rustic British food (think classic fish and chips, and rump steak) in a fun and friendly setting.

Artist Residence Bristol

When Justin and Charlotte were hunting for a site for their latest Artist Residence hotel they settled on an old boot factory in Bristol’s artsy St Paul’s community, a stone’s throw from the city’s buzzing centre. To start with, the building had all of the qualities the pair typically looks for – a nod to the past, original beams and exposed brick walls – to which they added their signature industrial-luxe style, an eclectic mix of vintage and boho furniture and a collection of original, specially-commissioned artworks by local artists. The 23 rooms in the boutique hotel range from the super-cosy Shoe Box, which has arched floor-to-ceiling windows, to the vast Artist Suite – think Georgian cornicing, views over leafy Portland Square and a roll-top tub in the bathroom. The idea was to create a proper, vibrant neighbourhood hang-out so there’s a real emphasis on the social spaces that are open to everyone: a coffee shop, bar, casual all-day restaurant, intimate dining room offering a seasonal menu, garden and event spaces for private hire.

Artist Residence Penzance

Artist Residence Penzance

Artist Residence Penzance brings a slice of eccentric charm to the historic seaside town. With 16 eclectically decorated bedrooms, three luxe suites and a cosy three-bedroom cottage, the revitalized Georgian pile is a unique seaside inn, perfectly situated for daily forays to local beaches, trips to the Isles of Scilly and just a short stroll to the pubs, restaurants and bars of Penzance town centre, the unique art deco lido and a view of the fairytale that is St Michael’s Mount.

There’s something about sunshine that brings on the urge to be near water. Add an English heatwave into the mix, and being by a pool (even of the paddling variety) becomes a necessity. You don’t have to flee the country to find an appealing outdoor pool or body of water to lounge by or plunge yourself into. If you’re looking for the best outdoor swimming lakes and pools in England, or Britain’s most challenging wild swimming spots, look no further. We’ve rounded up the best outdoor pools, open water activities, and the loveliest English lidos in the country. A wild summer swim (or a poolside lounge), here we come…

Best Outdoor Swimming In England: Lidos & Wild Swims

The Swan at Streatley, Reading

Set on a clean stretch of the River Thames, The Swan at Streatley is in prime position to invite its guests to enjoy the benefits of wild swimming. Led by wild swim instructor, Jo (who has been open swimming since she was twelve and even swum the English Channel twice), the wild swimming events are unlike any others. The session will cover entry and exit, technique, kit recommendations, swim etiquette, water safety and how to adapt pool swimming to outdoor swimming. You can even pop to the hotel afterwards for a spot of lunch or a steam and sauna.

Looking towards Thurlestone Rock, Devon, England

Thurlestone Rock, Devon

Thurlestone Rock in Devon is a great destination to aim for if you want a truly wild swimming experience. The rock formation is situated in Thurlestone Bay on the south Devon coast, sitting around 500 metres off the shore at high tide, and is famous for its unusual natural arch, created over centuries by the crashing waves.

Don a wetsuit (the water can be cold) and goggles and challenge yourself; experienced wild swimmers pride themselves on being able to swim through the arch, but it’s just as fun to simply float over the reef and – if the water’s clear – take in the aquatic garden of seaweed and fish below you. visitdevon.co.uk

Water running over weir at evening at Grassington, Yorkshire Dales National Park, North Yorkshire, England

Grassington, North Yorkshire

Grassington, Skipton

Grassington is an idyllic little Dales market town with a cobbled square, but if you can escape from its cosy pubs, it’s also a great base for a spot of wild swimming. The surrounding area is scattered with plunge pools, cascading waterfalls and the pristine waters of the River Wharfe. Choose to ride a rubber ring down the chutes, cool off with a paddle or brave the jump into the plunge pool at Loup Scar. Stick to the summer months unless you’re impervious to the chilliest of temperatures. wildswimming.co.uk

The pool opened in 1935 and has since become one of Cornwall’s greatest landmarks. A true beauty, jutting out into the sea and providing locals with a safe spot for sea swimming for 85 years. Scilly Sea Swim Challenge

Watch the spectacle (or join the madness) as 150 swimmers swim and walk between Scilly’s main islands in just one day. Starting at sunrise from Bar on St Mary’s north side the swimmers head first to St Martin’s arriving at Higher Town Quay. They then walk the length of the island to Lower Town Quay. Here they set off for Tresco, to Old Grimsby Quay passing Tean and St Helen’s. After walking across the backbone of Tresco to New Grimsby, they head off once again for the shortest of the swims to Bryher and then on to Samson. From Samson, comes the penultimate swim and arguably one of the toughest – through the deep channel to St Agnes. And then the longest swim of all to wrap up the challenge: from St Agnes to Porthcressa Beach back on St. Mary’s. Sounds easy, no? scillyswimchallenge.co.uk

Phase two restored the main building, with a café/restaurant/events space, pending funding. Occupying a 17th-century building once home to Sir James Dick, Provost of Edinburgh, Prestonfield House plays double duty as both a lavish countryside retreat and a city escape. Located just 10 minutes from Edinburgh’s Old Town, the hotel is set amid 20 acres of immaculate private parkland and, contrary to its unfussy white exterior, Prestonfield House’s interiors are a riot of ornamental rococo opulence fit for royalty.

Hotel Review: Prestonfield House, Edinburgh

STAY

There’s nothing left unadorned at Prestonfield House. Deep rouges and resplendent golds are revealed through rich tapestries, lavish textiles, embellished wallpaper and ornate antiques in the salons and public spaces. This continues through to the 18 exquisitely adorned guestrooms where sumptuous velvets abound, with regal statement beds overlooking the manicured greenery outside, while bathrooms, lined in Venetian glass, have Penhaligon’s toiletries.

the owner's suite

There’s the Owner’s Suite – discreetly accessed by a private turret staircase and hallway – and five romantic suites named after historical figures; the Winston Churchill suite showcases military memorabilia, while the moodier Benjamin Franklin suite is decked in walls of trompe-l’oeil drapery. Four-legged friends are also welcome, with comfy beds and dog bowls provided, alongside the sweep of land to bound around outside.

DO

Adjacent to Royal Holyrood Park, at the foot of Arthur’s Seat, Prestonfield House is in a prime location to explore Scotland’s beautiful landscape. Golfers can play a round on the 18-hole course next door and work up an appetite for afternoon tea in the rose garden. And, during the gloomy winter months, the Baroque-inspired Tapestry Room is a cosy spot to enjoy finger sandwiches and board games besides roaring log fires.

Further afield, Prestonfield House is just a 10 minute drive from Edinburgh’s Old Town, where you’ll also find its sister property, Witchery by The Castle, a sumptuous and eclectically indulgent hotel with a restaurant.

Prestonfield House's Tea House

EAT

With on-site beehives and a kitchen garden filled with all sorts – from courgette flowers to peas and mint – Prestonfield House is all about the farm-to-fork experience. It is also documented as the first estate to grow rhubarb in the 18th-century, which has inspired the name of the hotel’s restaurant. Here, the fine dining menu offers dishes from land, sea and air (including a separate vegan menu), with a focus on seasonal Scottish produce from artisan suppliers. Expect dishes like Glenkinchie whisky-cured sea trout mousse with ajo blanco, radishes and foraged herbs, followed by a deliciously tender loin of Scottish Borders lamb served with crushed peas, curds and whey.

THE FINAL WORD

This sumptuous bolthole offers a peaceful and relaxing getaway while still providing easy access to the beating heart of Edinburgh. With splendid gardens, lavish antique-filled interiors and an excellent restaurant – alongside top service and a never-to-forget team that will look after you during your entire stay – Prestonfield House certainly hits the mark for the best of both worlds.

With summer sun comes plans for picnicking. Fun in the sun on a rug with hampers of delicious food and children frolicking in the daisies is the ideal, but often the quick, easy default is rather different. Time poor-parents dashing to a park after school grab a spread of supermarket picnic ready-meals, familiar and adequate but lacking in the taste and goodness some homemade additions could bring. The extra effort should be seen as an opportunity to be grabbed, for so many reasons, starting with the delicious, nutritious and new food we can share with our children. Lizzie King tells us how to pack perfectly for a nutritious and delicious picnic.

Picnic Ideas & Recipes: How to Pack the Perfect Healthy Picnic

Easy Homemade Healthy Picnic Ideas

There are two obvious criteria for the picnic planner – ease of execution and ease of eating. Sausages and crisps are an easy score, but a little preparation can have a big pay-off.

Kids, despite often being wary of the new and untried, can be much more willing in a different environment, i.e. outside with their friends. And if you package things in a familiar way, this can be a great way to introduce new things, like these burger/sandwich looking Lamb pittas. Fast, tasty, health-packed and gobbled by all.

Making it easy to hold is the first battle, these are tasty and already half put together, but with extra sides they can customise their food and be independent gourmets.

lamb-meatballs-vitalove

Lamb and Chia coriander Pitta Pockets with Cucumber pickle

(Serves 5/6 children)

Ingredients

  • 500g Organic Lamb Mince
  • 1 Organic Egg, whisked
  • 1 Tbsp Chia Seeds
  • 1 Handful fresh Coriander, chopped
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • Sea Salt and Pepper

To assemble

  • 6-8 Wholemeal/Gluten free pitta breads
  • 1 Avocado sliced
  • 2 tomatoes sliced
  • 1 cucumber thinly sliced with a potato peeler

Method

  1. Combine all ingredients together in a mixing bowl.
  2. Pinch tablespoon sized clumps off and roll into balls.
  3. Flatten onto baking parchment covered tray and chill, covered in fridge until needed.
  4. Fry mini burgers in a little olive oil for a couple of minutes on each side and slide into warmed pittas.
  5. Store in paper lined tupperware to insulate until picnicking begins.

TOP TIP – Make double or more and freeze the rest.

Great food on the run, they also have a load of goodness in them that will keep kids fuelled and vitamin-rich for the afternoon. Using fresh mince here makes them tastier, fresher and cheaper than bought ones with fillers. These are protein rich, full of iron, brain food and bone-nourishing vitamins. The fresh coriander is a potent anti-inflammatory, and has strong anti-histamine properties that could help hay fever sufferers in the grass. And the little, invisible gems that are chia seeds are a powerhouse in nutrition, brimming with calcium for bone health and antioxidants they do more for their weight than almost any other food.

Avoiding the white stuff, crisps, bread rolls and biscuits will keep precious space in their tummies for the really good stuff. Veg sticks with houmous seem to tick the easy-to-eat and tasty boxes at once, so give a new flavour a go, or a fancy vegetable crisp, those kale ones are fabulous. A protein-rich dip with a vitamin filled stick.

strawberries

Quinoa and Rice Choc Crispies

Ingredients (makes approx 15 mini crispies)

  • 1 Cup Puffed Quinoa
  • 1 Cup Puffed Brown Rice
  • ½ Cup Coconut oil
  • ¼ cup Cacao Powder
  • 2 Tbsp Almond Butter
  • 5 Tbsp Brown Rice Syrup

Method

  1. Melt Coconut oil in small pan with syrup, nut butter and cacao, until just melted. Pour into bowl over quinoa and rice. Stir together until well mixed, sprinkling a few extra pops into the chocolatey pan will coat them and clean the pan. You won’t want to waste this elixir.
  2. Scoop tablespoonfuls into mini muffin cases and place on a tray in freezer for 10 minutes or fridge for 1 or 2 hours. Best made on the day as they are much crunchier and more unctuous when fresh from the fridge.
  3. Keeps for a day or two in an airtight container.

Puddings can be bribery for the fussy eater, but leaving them to it in the great outdoors means less pressure all round. When they’re ready make the last course fresh and colourful.

Fruit kebab, or lollipops as mine call them are a good one always a hit with little effort. A lovely mix of seasonal, ripe stuff, you’ve got to have the beautiful British strawberry, an incredibly nourishing gem.

picnic

The high Vitamin C load here also helps the little bodies absorb more of the iron from the lamb, so it’s a win win. And these decadent, delicious yet entirely fabulous for you quinoa chocolate crispies are a snap to make (10 minutes tops, so less than the checkout in M&S) and will ensure you’re the hero of the day.

Be sure to chill some water for the thirsty kids to guzzle and a bottle or two of rose in the cool bag to reward the adults after producing such a feast.

So easy and so satisfying to see kids gobble a chia and quinoa filled picnic.

Landlord won’t allow you to have pets? Well, here’s the next best thing: animal cafés. We can’t think of a more wholesome sight than to be surrounded by dogs, cats and kittens whilst having a coffee. It’s also great for stress relief. Did you know that a Washington State University study showed that stroking a cat or dog can significantly reduce stress levels within 10 minutes? That’s all the persuasion we need to head to one of the UK’s cutest animal cafés.

Planning a trip to St Ives this summer? Head west not just for the beautiful beaches, but for the food: St Ives is one of Cornwall’s increasingly diverse foodie hotspots, where slick seafood restaurants vie for attention with quirky bars, cosy pubs and neighbourhood cafés. Here Michael Smith, Executive Chef at Porthminster Beach Café, gives us his pick of the best places to eat in St Ives.

The Best Places to Eat in St Ives, Cornwall: A Foodie’s Guide

Porthminster Beach Cafe St Ives

Australian-born Michael Smith arrived in St Ives 15 years ago with an impressive international CV, a surfboard, and very little else. ‘I had been working in London and I’d heard about this mythical place called Cornwall, where the surf was good, the scenery was stunning, and the local produce was top class; it surpassed my expectations on every front,’ recalls Michael. His talent was soon recognised by the owners of Porthminster Beach Café, an art-deco style building right on the golden sands of the bay – and he has been at the helm ever since.

Michael Smith Head Chef Porthminster Cafe

Under Michael’s guiding hand, the restaurant has been the subject of a TV series (Beach Café, 2006), published a well-loved cookbook, established a coastal kitchen garden, and helped develop the unique beach-side St Ives Food & Drink Festival. This forward-thinking chef was one of the first in Cornwall to introduce foraged produce into his menus, adding a layer of local flavour to his Asian-inspired seafood dishes.

Michael is also the Executive Chef of Porthminster Kitchen, which offers a playful take on modern Cornish cuisine overlooking St Ives Harbour, and Porthgwidden Beach Café, a bustling family dining destination above a picturesque cove.

Here are Michael’s picks for a food-lovers visit to his adopted hometown.

Michael’s Pick: The Best Food Spots in St Ives

Porthmeor Beach Cafe St Ives

Porthmeor Beach Cafe

Scarlet Wines, Lelant

Scarlet is a bar, café and wine shop which serves great breakfasts, tapas-style lunches and evening meals, and makes some of the best coffee around. Whatever time of day I pop in, I always take the opportunity to peruse the wine shelves and choose something to take home for dinner. Owner Jon Keast has a maverick’s passion for up-and-coming wine-makers, off-beat regions and lesser-known grape varieties. scarlet-wines.co.uk

Porthmeor Beach Café

Porthmeor Beach Café is directly opposite the buzzy Tate Gallery. A lively café overlooking Porthmeor Beach, it’s the perfect vantage point for watching the surf. The eclectic menu is designed to be shared – order a bunch of small plates, sit back and enjoy the view. Try and grab a booth if you can for alfresco dining in comfort. porthmeor-beach.co.uk

The Queens Hotel

The Queens Hotel is a gastropub in the centre of town which is my top choice for Sunday lunches with the family. It’s relaxed, the food is reliably good and they use as much local produce as possible. queenhotelstives.com

The Mermaid

The Mermaid is a St Ives institution. Family owned and run, it’s one of the town’s oldest restaurants and my choice for an early evening meal with the kids. The menu focuses on fresh seafood and really showcases the great variety available to us here in Cornwall. mermaidstives.co.uk
